Technical Gearstick reverse collar staying up

Hi guys.

My 2009 Panda's gearstick reverse collar is sticking up. The gator ring is also missing a tab so the boot comes away shifting to reverse. I doubt these are related. I have already found the gator rings for sale online. What's likely to be the cause of the reverse collar not springing?

I don't know

I suspect the gear knob has been glued and there a bit of spillage

I guess there no option but to strip and investigate

As far as I know it's not a common issue

Actually I've just read my first message, sticking up isn't quite right. I can easily slide it down, it just doesn't spring. It moves freely.

There is an elastic band that is supposed to go on the ring IIRC.

Yeah, my spring is missing. I've been given one from an Alfa, I'll try it later.

Not sure I know which bit your talking about

The white elastic acts in the same way the spring would: it pulls the reverse ring on your gear stick (the thing you have to pull up to select reverse). It's a very simple, mechanical way to achieve that. I had the same issue as you: the ring stays up. I disassembled the gaiter (beware: the clips break pretty easily!) and nicked a bit of elastic from the wife's sewing kit. A couple of stitches (first time needleworking since 30+ years!) and it works like a charm again!

So I fitted the Alfa spring that I was given and it works!

My elastic is torn (see photograph) should I try to sort that too? What should it attach to?

Completely different to my 05 and 11 they just have a cable tie around the top and clipped into the plastic rings at the bottom, so i am as clueless as you on this

So I fitted the Alfa spring that I was given and it works!

Brilliant!

The elastic does exactly the same job the spring does. Yours just had the elastic instead of spring, some are like that.
So no need to do anything about the elastic. Maybe cut it off, I'd say, so it wouldn't get caught there.

Mine has the cable tie and the clips (one of which is broken of course, grrr) but the elastic looks like it's supposed to do something...
