I prefer to think of myself engaged in battle like David and Goliath or St. George and the Dragon. Me against 18 year old rusty Punto drum brakes doesn't quite capture the angst, exertion, difficulty and intrigue lolMaybe that is the problem, the Monster addiction.![]()
Trouble is, so far the 18 year old is winning.I prefer to think of myself engaged in battle like David and Goliath or St. George and the Dragon. Me against 18 year old rusty Punto drum brakes doesn't quite capture the angst, exertion, difficulty and intrigue lol
Power to the Puntos!Trouble is, so far the 18 year old is winning.![]()
Aren't you supposed to be rooting for the underdog in this battle? - Me lolPower to the Puntos!![]()
Trouble is the "big dog Punto" is pi**ing all over you.Aren't you supposed to be rooting for the underdog in this battle? - Me lol
Well... it's your Punto, you're the one to give it power. So I am.Aren't you supposed to be rooting for the underdog in this battle? - Me lol

The nut needs to be adjusted for the hand brake to work. How else?!DO NOT adjust the nut inside the car to achieve a set number of clicks when pulling lever up-doing so will very likely pull the shoe levers off their stops this will stop the self adjusters working correctly
Yes, the nut on the handbrake lever mecanism (inside the cabin) is for adjusting cable tension only, not the amount of self-adjustment for the shoes. If the brake shoes are worn and the self-adjustment mecanism is no longer compensating, change the brake shoes. The nut needs to be adjusted for the hand brake to work. How else?!
The cable adjuster is turned to take only the slack in the cables WITHOUT starting to pull the levers on the shoes. Then the self adjusters set correct shoe drum clearence. Remember one end of adjuster is touching shoe lever so if cable too tight it is already starting to move shoe lever. The nut needs to be adjusted for the hand brake to work. How else?!
Oh... I missed you/Jack saying the self-adjustment part.Yes, the nut on the handbrake lever mecanism (inside the cabin) is for adjusting cable tension only, not the amount of self-adjustment for the shoes.
Oh... I missed you saying the self-adjustment part.
Of course! But self adjustment is to be done before tensioning the cables. We covered that, been said multiple times. After self adjusting is done (by pressing the pedal) then move to nut and adjust cable tension.
It is a tricky process, i'll come back and post a list of the order of things, as i think they should be done, and others can correct me as necessary.Yes I have said that many times.
Once slack taken out of cables do not touch cable do not touch it again trying to get a certain number of clicks on hand lever.
The old cable on the left is off, it does have a shortened heatshield so its a right hand cable. The new left going on is shorter than the old one but not enough to level up the equyalizer bar in the cabin most likely.
I wonder if the broken bracket shown nstill attached to the old cable has allowed the cable to have a shorter path, will that happen? It is still working but in poor condition. Its also not the same brand as the old right hand one i took off. I bought the car with this problem and it seems a previous mechanic has had a go at fixing it...

I know, forgive me, i find it difficult to understand this, above all else!seriously I have written several times stating its not overall cable length that matters for balance but that each cable inner length minus its outer length is the same for both cables.
You could have a 1metre cable and a 8 metre cable but as long as inner minus out lengths the same it wouldn't matter
