i have a 1996 cinq sporting and im going to get a new engine put init iv looked at the faqs and im thinking of geting the 1.2 16v punto engine put in but b4 i do i wont to no what ever1 thinks is the best engine to put in and give me an i dear of how much it would cost me to get the 1.2 put in by a mechanic

6 to 7 hundred quid, at a guess. You want the 6 speed box, ideally the ECU.

if you're getting someone else to do it, it makes sense to use someone who has done a fair number. Midland FIAT seem to have done a lot.

Were I putting a 16valver in I'd do like the EVO crew and go for a 1.4: you end up with a car that's probably a touch faster than a high boost turbo point to point and much more reliable, economical and easier to drive. See here.

u saying i should go for the 1.4 then will that cost more to fit

I say do some research, in the way of reading. Me and another guy are fitting the 1.2 16v engines to our cinqs, and kritip has done a very good thread about his 1.2 and 1.4 16v engine swaps. J333evo has done the 1.4 16v conversion.

Just get hunting and reading.

P.s. none of my stuff is on this forum, all on CC

Not a lot, but there is more to sort out with regard to the ancilliaries. In particular you have to do some messing about on the intake side. Also, consider an after market ECU. Emma's car uses an Emerald, Kripit's a Megasquirt. Going Emerald with the 1.4 means reverting to a 2 coil wasted spark set up.

what esl will i need to get done other then the engine

What's esl?

You'll need to uprate the brakes and suspension. Can't remember what is on Emma's car, but it's sensible, rather than overly hard.

For brakes, go for the Punto GT set up (huge thread on this and FAQ), you'll probably want to use 15" wheels to match the 6 speed box, but no larger than 6J. Late type calipers are best, Alfa 155 pattern disks a good starting point (and cheap).

Now that really pis*es me off why is it only there? and why should people have to pay for the privilege of the information?

Kristian has posted all his trials and tribulations on hear as have people like DTT and they should be hailed and applauded for that

I personally will never pay to join a car club and would rather fail in my modifications than support elitist activities after all i would never even read a news letter

Well before the internet became widely available you really had little choice, unless you knew someone or were involved in engineering, or you paid someone to do it. Any club or society, car or otherwise (remember, FF is not a club) will charge a membership fee. Clubs don't run on thin air - and this forum certainly doesn't come to think of it - it all needs funding from somewhere. Sort of same thing with buying magazines such as PPC or CCC when it was still about.

Plus, being in a club isn't just about getting your hands on information - there's a lot of camaderie and friendship to be had, as well as other incentives such as reduced prices on spares (for example).

is that 6to700 just for the fiting or for geting the engine and fiting

There's a lot more to fitting it than just plonking it in (assuming it just drops on the standard mounts) there's the setting up to do especially if you need a custom ECU, which will take up the best part of a grand (as a ball park figure). So that 600 - 700 would probably be for just labour and setting the lump up.

As the engine you're looking at getting is fairly recent and there are relatively few about, you'll part with a few hundred quid to get the engine. A gearbox will then be a few hundred more on top at a guess. It just depends on what sort of prices you can get.

may be consider a 1242 8v, to save cost ???

Ming
ya but what the point its no where near as fast as the 16v and how much would it cost to make it and then u still would not b aball to make it as fast in the end as the 1.216v or 14

Yeah, but it's a lot more straightforward and considerably cheaper to drop the 8v in there. The 1242 8v swap has been covered quite extensively in the past.
