Technical Engine problems

Hi all

Just fitted my Tricker TB with some unexpected results, the engine has become totally periodic in its performance. When its cold it fines, when it warms up it starts to struggle low in the rev range, judders the whole car when I dip the throttle at about 2k revs, and I think it also missfires (although I'm not sure how to tell, theres a pop and it feels as though the car stops pulling for a fraction of a second.)

Anyway, higher in the rev range it seems ok, but not as it was before, so I slap on the old TB once more, and the same happens! I have used the 40mm Alu spacer still, although very much doubt that is the cause

So, I'm guess I did something wrong in the changing of the TB, but what would cause the engine to pull less, judder more, growl and occasionally missfire?

did you connect the vacuum hoses up properly, and to were they should go?

Didn't let any water get into the inlet manifold did you?

as stated it sounds like a vacuum hoes is incorrectly fitted or you have a poor seal causing an induction leak giving the engine more air than the ecu knows about

I'm certain I didnt, but your the second person to have suggested that now.

I'm dreading the answer, but what can be done about this?

Ok, two for that one as well. It seems so odd that it started fine with the 40mm when its cool, but started getting problematic when warm, now I've switched back to the standard, it appears to be dodgy all the time

Which one is the vacuum hose? Is it top or bottem of TB?

there are a few the go to the bottom of the TB, that must be on the right connections else it's not going to work properly. affriad i can't remeber where each one runs to though, hpoefully someone else can.

What could I do if water did get in there?

Wouldnt it be groggy all the time though? No just when it warmed up?

surely some water would run dodgy for a while but it would soon clear or evapoorate from the heat of the engine and would be ok after.

sounds to me like vacume. you might have damaged a hose or not fitted one back on correctly. one to look out for is the one that runs from the inlet manifold to the Map sensor. you shouldnt have touched it really but never know

take a pic of your tb and we will see if its all in the right place

ok, just looked on mine (and its raining too!)

3 vacuum lines on the back. the two lower ones are blocked off, well one goes to the vacuum gauge..same thing.

the top one runs to the charcoal canister

Ok, well the one that leads to the charcoal canister does look a little dodgy (as in may be split) But only VERY slightly, could this be the cause

What would water in the engine do? I assume it would be dodgy running all the time, not just when its warm?

as stated the little amount of water would evaporate off IMO.large amounts of water in the engine can blow it as it doesnt compress as air does *BANG* but this doesnt apply here

Thank the lord! Right thats the worst case ruled out

The most likely one is that I've inadvertantly split something in the transfer process.

But what!?

Would fiat run a dignostic with all the aftermarket bits I've got? (see sig)

no need for a diagnostic plus if it is an induction leak a diagnostic wouldnt show it i think.
i would start with the vacuum hoses as the fault shows over both TB's

Could even be just the MAP sensor pipe....

Did you use gaskets or something to seal the spacer to the inlet fanimold and the spacer to the TB?

Yeah I used them, they fitted fine as well, Mine wasnt quite as good a Made in England though, part of the made was cut off by the hole.

Just been driving it again, definately fine from cold (as far as I dare push my foot in cold anyway) Kicks in as engine has warmed up, is this typical for vacuum pipe failiures?

Forgot to mention that while I was doing it one of the leads came off and it possibly allowed the plug underneath to get damp. But I cleaned it up and doubt its that as its fine when its cold, really weird.

Ok, so before I have another look at it, what do we all reckon it is? The vacuum pipe thing to the map sensor seems ok, and unless its just a really unfortunate time for the sensor to go, its not that!

Only (possibley) damaged pipe is the one leading to the charcoal canister. could that be the cause?
