Does anyone know if there is a blanking plate mod for the EGR Valve on a 3.0 litre multijet engine or alternately can the vacuum pipes be disconnected/blocked to prevent the EGR Valve operating?
Reason for asking...........recently had a throttle body fault which brought on the eml on dashboard and EGR fault code. On the plus side the fuel economy went up straight away from 22 to 25mpg. Throttle body fault sorted and economy back to 22mpg. :)

yes you can get a kit off ebay did it on my last motorhome now got the same on my new one you buy a plate and a cheater £60 posted

Euro 4 yes, euro 5 no (euro 5's are electronic operated not vacuum) I believe

I am, as my egr is fooked and the heat exchanger leaking

I just had my electronic egr rendered inop by means of mapping. Costs $500, partly because of the time it takes to R & R the ruddy ecu. What a stupid place to put it. Am getting really good mileage. Just finished a trip of 10300km from Brisbane to Tasmania and back over 3 months and averaged 10.1L/100 overall. This was in a 4.1tonne Avida Eyre. I still wonder how. Excellent power and economy.

Is that the figure on the dash or did you work it out at the pump?

I have a 3 litre 6 speed manual van with no weight in it.
It's just an empty van which I use to travel to Toowoomba and Brisbane for picking up stuff and camping in along the way and it returns around 7L/100, but then it is only ticking over at 1750 RPM at 100kph.
The round trip covers 1,100km to 1,200km and I still have fuel in reserve from a 90 litre tank.
Mind you, most of the trip is on flat highways with one steep hill and a couple of rolling hills and apart from the steep hill, everything else is in 6th gear.

I am referring to dash reading overall but have done a few fill to fill tests and the difference is minimal. They are very economical.

Does not surprise me. My trip, particularly 5000km in Tasmania was quite hilly and windy. The trip up the Newell gave me 9.7 and included some Melbourne traffic, a couple of Nat parks along the way and some city traffic at this end. Copped a couple of days of headwinds too but not too fierce.

Mine has been fitted since January 2015 and two days ago the unit failed.
I have contacted Tafmet both to complain of its premature demise but also to buy another
The immediate symptom is erratic tick over and smoke while still running normally at revs.
Initially it brings up a MAF fault.
As soon as you disconnect one of the wires to the vacuum solenoid harness red or blue the engine idles normally and clean, the MAF fault clears and the EGR fault comes on purely due to a lack of the tafmet. So running OK now albeit with the engine light on.

tried to blank my fiat 3.0 burstner a class off fitted the cheater ok but no way I could get to fit the plate so made up a new plate and blanked the pipe off the other side of the cooler .not been out in it yet but cant see any way it wouldnt work so this may be the easy way to do it

New unit arrived yesterday and fitted this morning. All ECU errors reset and now running sweet.
The new unit is a little bit better finished than the early one too.
I will now post the faulty one back to Tafmet as promised.

hi sorry about that senior moment . I am about to blank off the egr I fitted the tafmet months ago with no problem I know you just took your egr valve off leaving the cooler in place & you said it was better leaving it in one piece . but to give me more room to undo the clamp at the bottom of the egr unit I was thinking of taking the cooler off first. to get to my question when you separated the unit in your photo did you have to get a new gasket sorry its long winded . thanks
