okay so i have my laptop on wifi(xp pro) and 2 pc's on a wired connection
that all goes through a netgear wgr614 V6 router
1 pc is on xp pro and the other on vista home premium
my BB is cable

so round about the time i got the vista pc ive had my internet connection dropping out
requiring me to reboot the router/modem to get net access back
i tried to upgrade the router firmware but it wont take it
goes to upload, then uploads for a bit and gives a page could not be displayed

so is it the router, vista conflict or what?

Did you check to see if there are any reported network problems in your area?

When the router failed to update did you go into diagnostics and look at the state of the connection? You can also force a reconnect and watch it happen, if your router requests it but gets no answer it's the BB down.

hmm well today the connection has played up
something that seems to cause issues is google? do a google search and clicking on a result causes the problem?
last time it did it i rebooted the modem but not the router
no change
rebooted the router and it cleared the issue?

Never had a cable modem but this must be your cable provider dropping you off, or the modem falling over. If it's crashing after Rx/Tx ing a lot of packets I would guess its the modem, they run a simple QAM constellation over cable. does it come as part of the cable package?

it does,its fairly new
its a scientific atlanta 2100
think i need to call VM tbh

When you re-boot the router I suppose you put a browser on one of the PCs on its IP address and then somewhere in the menus its got reboot router as an option? I would expect a lot more stuff to be available once you log on as an admin on the router. eg attached devices. If this is good and you can see all your PCs on the network it's a bit of a clue that the router is working.

well it was playing up today
so i took the router away
then went for a direct pc to modem connection, nothing
then hooked up the XP pc direct and got internet

soconnected the vista pc back up direct and tried disabling firewall etc and nothing
admitted defeat and called VM support
after getting the usual have you rebooted modem,it must be the firewall etc
we eventualy got to a silly little setting in vista
on the lan properties under IPv4 properties
all it needed was change it to obtain DNS server address automatically
so hopefully all fixed

edit: looking pretty much spot on
