I currently own a mk2 1.2 8v Punto and after test driving other cars, I've actually discovered I'm quite fond of the way punto's drive! Therefore, I've been looking at Grande Punto's and have seen a lot of websites claiming that the 1.9 sporting multijet is the way to go. However, I also noticed that they have DPF filters which is what worries me as I don't cover a huge amount of miles but I also do more country driving than town driving.

What I wanted to know is does it sound like I would be able to run a DPF diesel without many problems or would I be better off going for one of the turbo petrols?

My daily commute to work is 5 miles each way down 60mph country roads (only 10-15min journey) and I also drive 90 miles up the motorway every 2 weeks to stay at my girlfriends. On top of this I also do the standard small trips to shops, etc and occasional weekends away.

I know it is not a huge amount of driving (roughly 8000 a year I think) but the roads I tend to travel on are all out of towns and allow me to put my foot down a bit which is why I was thinking I might be alright. I've heard that the petrol isn't half as good as the diesel which is why I was hoping I'd be fine.

On the other hand, is it even worth buying another Punto?! I've never really had problems with my X reg other than the usual powersteering and then exhaust falling off, clunking noise when pulling off with more than 2 people in the car, tyres, etc (so not that much!) but I do enjoy driving it and I just think now I need something a bit sturdier that will happily sit on the motorway comfortably and also something with a bit of acceleration around the country lanes!

In my opinion: stay with petrol. IMO short trips, even with reasonable speed are not necessary enough to keep a modern dpf diesel happy.

I'm pretty sure that the 1.9 JTD engine was dropped from the Grande Punto before the Euro V standard went into effect in 2011. On the other hand, 8000 miles a year doesn't justify the cost difference of the diesel engine. On the other other hand, older Grande Puntos with 1.9 engines in 120 and 130 HP trim will have already taken a huge depreciation hit but all that power may put up your insurance...

I drive six or seven times 8000 miles a year and could justify nearly anything but I can only get the 1.3 with 95 HP in my Qubo Trekking.

All The 1.9 GP's up to 1.6 change over were not DPF unless you chose to pay £250 and have one fitted as an option.

This time round i would of paid fiat £250 not to have one but they wouldn't do that option :(

How strange it was an option - I wonder how they tried to sell it?

'Fancy loads of trouble, crap MPG, and paying an addition £250 on the price of your car?.........Then order a DPF now!'

Thanks for all the help guys. I've decided to go the petrol route and look at a 1.4 t-jet. I've even been swayed towards the Bravo route instead of the GP but still weighing up my options at the moment. The Bravo seems like it will cope with the motorway much easier in terms of comfort although I've read that it can feel quite disconnected to drive which is where the GP may excel...

Any thoughts?
