Does my 1.9 Multijet have a DPF ?

I have just got a 56 1.9 Multijet Sporting and I want to change the oil and oil filter, fuel filter and air filter. The Local dealer tells me that he can not tell if it has a DPF without looking at the car. If it has the electrics have to be reset after the oil change. In other words the dealer will have to do it and charge me 99. If it hasn't then I can do it myself and save about 60. So what does a DPF look like?

Why so sure? There's no guarantee as it was optional on the 1.9 Sporting, some do, some don't.

Easy way to tell is if the DPF regeneration warning lamp comes on during the dash self-test when switching on the ignition.

Well you learn something new everyday. 5 says it does not have one.

Just ring up a Fiat dealer and ask too.

Re: Does my 1.9 Multijet have a DPF ?

I agree, probably 90% don't have one, but having worked for a Fiat Main Dealer from 1999 up until last year, I have serviced a few early 1.9 GP's that did have a DPF (and always caught us out when quoting prices over the phone as there's nothing, even on a SIGI, to say if it has or hasn't got one).

Re: Does my 1.9 Multijet have a DPF ?

Easiest way to tell is look under the car between the front wheels.

If you see what looks like a cat then a centre silencer then pipe to backbox you have no DPF.

If you see what looks like a cat then pipework straight to backbox, the bad news is you have a DPF.

Thanks Lal, I have a cat, middle box and back box as you describe. Eurocarparts recommend shell Helix 5W40 and a Hengst filter so unless anyone has any better ideas thats the way I'm going.

Should be fine for it. Ive just done oil and filter change on mine. I used Motul 300v but i do big miles in mine so wanted the best oil in it.

Try haggle the price on the filter, they do not cost anywhere near what they sell them for

Dear Lal B3N

Just re-reading your thread, as I have bought a 2008 1.9 Sporting GP and am unsure of whether it has a DPF. I've just looked underneath the car and it looks like, just after the front wheels, it has some pipe, then what looks like a cat (quite small box) then a longer box, then pipe all the way to backbox. Would you say my car has DPF?

We have asked Fiat Direct and they say it hasn't, but Westover Fiat (who we bought it from) say it has. Very confusing.

Re: Does my 1.9 Multijet have a DPF ?

You mentioned you had a cat then a box, thats the centre silencer, based on the previous post I'd suggest you don't have a dpf which is vood news.

Hi Rackham and thanks. Could I ask, does the cat look quite small, almost the size of a large fist? Could this not be the DPF?

If not, then would it be correct to say, if you have a centre silencer, then you haven't got a DPF? All very confusing, especially as I have two different answers.

One last question, is it a the bad thing having a DPF?

Thanks again.

The cat is a cylinder shape with what looks like woven metal bands housing filters iirc. The silencer is a longer solid cylindrical pipe. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Dpf filters build up and store the exhaust emissions around town and then dump them when you open her up on the motorway or dual carriageway. If most of your driving is around town it never gets a chance to empty and just clogs up, choking the engine and needing replacement filters at potentially thousands of pounds iirc. Plenty of people with them get them mapped out with a remap to tell the engine not to use it.

Holy ####! I hope I don't have one, as I think the car has had an 'easy' life!

The potential 'cat' on my car just looks like a metal cylinder shape, sticking out of the exhaust. I will take the car to Fiat Direct to confirm. Many thanks.

Think I may have got my parts mixed up (well what they look like anyway). Did do a quick google search and found this though, not sure if it helps exhaust system with no dpf, just searchedcfor images of gp catalytic convertor .

Also found this exhaust system with dpf

If it did happen to have a dpf you can DIY and buy the cables and software licence for multiecuscan that will set you back about 80 to 100 quid a bit more than the 60 difference but it will soon pay its way on the next oil change and any other diag that you need to do
