on detailing,
at the weekend, @ autoglym, i spent over 14 hours detailing my car.
it was the most stressfull and tiring weekend ever. for my fast car shoot all the car got was a wash, but this was a whole new legue.
the cars had to be absolutely immaculate. the atmosphere was tense and the thought of being judged under such harsh conditions was so terrifying.
the judges were so hard to please, they were looking for any sign of dirt or dust, to the extent of checking under rubber seals and in the tyre treads for dust. i became very obsesive compulsive in a very short space of time. dust would appear before your eyes that wasnt really there, like macbeth's out dam spot out!
it was so hard to compete with a daily driver who had just driven 300 miles, with trailor queens, or affectionatly known as trailor trash lol!
i can now completely understand what this guys was feeling, i know its hard to believe but what he has done makes so much sense now!
the judges were checking paint with uv torches looking for imperfections. the cars in the autoglym were cleaner than cars from the factory, my car has never been as clean in its life.
when i walked outside the arena its made me realise how false the atmosphere in there was, made me realise there was a real world lol!!
one of the judges owned an xr3i that was a multi award winning concours car, there wasnt a single spec of dust on it. it had been sprayed on a spit roast, his bolt heads all lined up and the writing on his tyres lined up perfectly with the writing on his alloys.
he said to me, that concours is an illness, once your in there, in that position you cant stop polishing.
the guys next to me with th scooby spent hours polishing there mud flaps, seems funny but very ironic!
i spent hours upon hours in my interoir, marticulously detailing every last area. but you know what, i missed the dust under the clips that hold your sunvisors on, i was gutted, ( still won tho lol)
in the end i was cleaning with cotton buds and tooth pics, i never though id see the day.
sorry for the depth here, but i truely do feel i view cars in a total different light now, it was the steepest learning curve ive ever had. the things the judges made you aware of, and once your aware of them and how to spot them........they never dissappear.............just more cleaning.
i feel for this guys..... but you know what, id do it to.
