Just like the flu, or should I say influenza, aids, cancer. swine flu, bird flu, sars?.

Not really just like though is it, there is a vaccine for flu, aids is avoidable and these days very treatable if some one does get it. you cant catch cancer. i don't personally know anyone who has family members who have had the last 3 but i have 2 people on my facebook friends list with family in hospital at this very moment with covid 19. and i only have 106 people on my friends list so not very good odds.
So no its not just like at all is it.

Its probably more just like Spanish flu (that originated in the US) and lasted 2 years and killed 50 million people.

Somewhere much earlier in this thread I mentioned that viruses do not want to kill their host, as that stops the spread. Covid, being new to humans is a bit fierce, and killing some hosts.
Saw a YouTube vid a few days ago, a German doctor and virologist saying they had seen evidence of some infections being milder, and the covid strain having mutated to have a lesser effect on humans. So that at least is a chink of light at the end of a long tunnel.

Not sure on that one, although the low rate of mortality is a good thing.
Even here, the rate is as low as 2 out of a population of 13,000
and I am sure there are some remote locations with zero mortality due to Covid.

Well it’s using data from the office of national statistics, my guess is they are looking at only cities as obviously there will be many little towns or villages that have not had deaths, it was the independent so feel free to go and look it up

I am not going to look it up because the figures are sad enough and its not a competition.
I just think reporters should be careful what they print, which could lead to over confidence regarding isolation and social distancing.
Already people are thinking the lockdown is going to end on Sunday due to the government saying they will make slight changes to the requirements. It is a most dangerous time.

The surgical gowns from Turkey have not been used as don't meet British standard. surely someone should have checked that before ordering a plane load :bang:
I would have thought if not surgical standard they can be used for some thing else, must be better than just a plastic apron? If a local rotary club has banded together people to make scrubs out of old sheets, these must be able to re assigned to another use

I've been to Norwich a few times. Lovely place and great pubs. Love the Walnut Tree Shades. A real "rough and ready" pub like we used to have in Peterborough in the 80s

Why question it if you have no intention of checking the facts? It’s got nothing to do with it being a competition, you stated that you doubted the information.

If you said “I’ve bought a white car” and I said “I doubt you have” and you posted a picture of it, I’d look like a complete loon if I said “no I’m not going to look at your picture because there are so many colours in the world, I don’t want to limit myself to looking at a white car only and also it’s not a competition”

This is the problem with the world right now, people seem to love to doubt the verifiable facts but don’t want to look into anything themselves.

To add to the comparable figures issue, there have been some studies performed of the virus genomes since the outbreak.

Reports of one study suggest the virus has mutated from the original Wuhan one and may have become more infectious.

It is suggested that the original Wuhan virus, D614 has been overtaken by it's mutated version, D614G since around February.

This mutation is argued to have seen a development in it's "accessory proteins", (the Spikes) the part that helps it invade a hosts cells and evade the immune system.

If true, that might explain why countries that have developed outbreaks later on have suffered more.

On a similar track there is another study that has thought to have mapped a "Deleterious Mutation" in one mutation.
They suggest they have found a mutation of the virus that has lost some pairs of genes that make up these accessory proteins and that has made the virus "less fit".

I'm no virus expert, but I do understand how a virus invades, replicates and spreads and it's not uncommon for a virus to both neutrally mutate (unharmful to the virus) and deleteriously mutate (which damages it).

The act of a virus replication can cause it to make mistakes as it replicates, which is why some viruses peter out.
As it seems to replicate really fast, it wouldn't be beyond imagination to see it mutate very quickly, perhaps to a less harmful one that a body can mount a timely response to without being over come.

So if this is all true, this mutation of virus has lost (deleted) part of it's self that helps it invade a host and evade their immune system. As it lost them as part of it's hurried self replication, it's hard to imagine how it could reacquire them.

The studies aren't yet published only reported on what they have released so far, but are by teams from Los Alamos National Laboratory and Arizona State University if anyone fancies a bit of a read.

with this information and the bank holiday (why are we still having them?)and potential for easing of the lockdown will give a false sense of security and that second dreaded wave will happen, if you want figures then Norfolk has

That seems to be along the lines of the report I saw yesterday from Germany that they were finding a weaker strain that affected us less.

Brings a little hope.
