See personally Pete I agree to a point, however, that point (IMO) stops when the cars are so completely unmatched. a GTi 1.9 205 will do 0-60 in around 7.6 (according to what i can find) in against the cinqs 13.6, that's a hell of a lot of thumbling time (even up to 40mph). A badly driven coupe for example would trounch a Cinq sporting even if driven by a bad driver because even if you spent a few seconds not moving you would catch up VERY quickly.

You know a lot about cars so what does the following imply to you about the gear ratios of the Gti:

Ratios (mph per 1000rpm): 1st 2.92 (6.2); 2nd 1.85 (9.8); 3rd 1.36 (13.3); 4th 1.07 (16.9); 5th 0.86 (20.9). Final-drive ratio 3:69:1

Anything like the cinq?

The GTi wil do 0-40 in 4.1 seconds (found a very interesting site: http://www.boycies.freeserve.co.uk/tspecs.htm)
Ratios are nothing like, really. On those figs, a 205 GTI (assuming 6500 rev limit, I know the 1.6 used to cut there) you'd be able to do:

1st: 40mph (feck!) hence the 4.1 secs 0-40
2nd 64mph (feck!!)
3rd 86mph (feck!!!)

Compare this with the cinq at the redline:

1st: 24mph
2nd 43mph
3rd 62mph

so the very short gearing of the centos does help. If you don't get the revs right on the Pug off the line, you will be quite slow. As I said, once you get beyond 2nd gear in the centos it's when you start to lose the battle.

unless you have forced induction :D

Oh JR it's only a bit of fun, people claim huge victories, I state why it was impossible. I would like to know how you knocked off your 0-60 time, a turbo or 1242?

Cheers Pete, so which would you put your money on? Exactly :p

Hehe, I love this
I see somebody beat a 205 GTi, either the 115 BHP or 130BHP version...sure!

And Evo, not again, you're a grown man! BMW 330ci couldn't overtake, well if he's being a considerate motorist and letting others past then it's hardly a comparison. Anyway, how long does it take to get a Cinq sporting from 50 to 110 in 5th gear? 90 seconds??

MR-2 aswell, maybe it was a very ill MR-2 hence the smoke, without even looking I am sure the MR-2 isn't in the same league as a cinq whatever model it is.

I am right in remembering you drive a standard 54 BHP sporting, i.e. not a 1242 or turbo....

smurfhead, I might even believe you, the Golfs are heavy and the 1.6 is a little small.

Only just saw this. I don't make idle or empty boosts, not my style, and you may note the little bit at the bottom of any thread I post which states the cars I drive. My Cinq. is as quoted a Van Aaken Hi-boost turbo which holds a steady 0.6bar of boost & over-boosts to 0.8 an acceleration giving it something like 110/115bhp. As the Cinq has such short gear ratios I have found from experience that sitting at 50mph in the Cinq = about 2600rpm in 5th which is absolutely prime for the turbo to spool up and let you accelerate very rapidly. I know for fact that my integrale (as standard) will do 0-62 in 5.7secs 100 a further 7 or so secs off, the Cinq to be fair is up there with it in the 50-100 times in 5th gear, granted if I dropped gears in the grale (mind it will do over 100mph in 3rd) it would be diff. but as for the cars I mentioned, I laugh at those in the grale and was pleased to be able to keep up with them and not let them be able to gain any advantage.

I would therefore point you here where you can see figures for the cars in question, although theoretical, I have found them to be a pretty good representation of the real world. http://www.letstorquebhp.com/ Try putting in 115bhp for a FWD car with 730kgs and see for yourself the figures produced.

BMW 330ci 0-60 6.87 MR2 7.01 my Cinq 6.85
BMW 330ci 0-100 18.08 MR2 19.58 my Cinq 19.04
BMW 330ci 60-100 11.21 MR2 12.56 my Cinq 12.19

As you can see, they are all very close, not much more than a fag paper between them, which as I said meant I kept up, I didn't say I beat them :bang:

Oh and if you want to see some very startling fig put in a 4WD car with 260bhp and 1300kgs, I wonder what that could be (y)

Aaron.

Lol. MY 1108cc mpi engine has a 4-2-1 supersprint stainless manifold, full custom stainless peco exhaust. Modified k and n forced induction kit, magnecor leads and a race lightened flywheel. With a good driver I would still put my money on the cento!

Full exhaust system, at most +5Bhp from Standard,
Forced induction kit? is that a turbo yure running there...+2BHp at a push
HT Leads ~Little difference, maybe +1BHp
Flywheel...I have no idea, but makes it accelerate faster.. (y)

Power isnt the name of the game...for TL GP its torque yu want... Thats the ability of the engine to turn at a given force!

Power to weight ratio is important too...A Cento is light and a normal engine could be chooned for a respectable power output (say 75-80BHp for a N/A 1242 8v)...the Pug 205 GTi is fat and uses a much heavier engine. It might also have more power- but the engine's heavier so will take longer to get to its peak power band. The gearing of the Cento will mean it will get there much much faster, but it wont have the speed at this engine speed to keep up with the Pug at the same speed (when it gets there!!).

Tom, you're clever, you know if the Gti was driven remotely averagely it would leave a cinq behind within 10metres :p (yours a bit longer as it is, and quite a bit further for the 80 BHP you talk about but still, it would).

Would those basic mods really knock over 3 seconds off the 0-60 time?

Evo: My mistake (i did get corrected yesterday); I didn't know you were running a turbo :) I do very much believe you :)

This thread has gotten boring now :(

All i'd say is that my cinq is bloody good fun to drive and giving some cars a run for thier money EVEN IF YOU GET SHAT ALL OVER is lots of fun!!!
Don't give a crap about performance figures, its all about enjoying the moment.

My 205 comments still stand :p

I will leave the thread a week or two for the Scooby, Evo and Porsche beaters!

Well on my bike yesterday I outdid a Toyota Avensis for about 25 metres at the lights, until he woke up and realised the lights had changed :p

That's the trouble with bikes, (well with me cycling) - you can keep up with even emergency starts but only for about 2 metres lol

I think that basic stuff cant knock much off a standard 0-60 time...3 secs sounds silly

Im now going to withdraw from this discussion and head back to the corner and read a book on something thoroughly boring!

After you finish that you can read the first 3 chapters of my VB book. Why oh why?

I thought as much. :)

Folk must not read my posts, Paul - it's totally dependant on driver not the car mate, maybe you'd floor it in a fast car to catch someone but others think different like those that won't go past 95mph, there either scared for their licence or safety or both!

Then there's the "I only drive fast in the straights"

"I overtake at 60mph without dropping gears"

And a whole host of others who can't drive fast and properly so enivitibly they lose, for example Take similar cars onto a track and give them to someone who knows the track and someone who doesn't and who'd win?

Liam

Thought i'd dig this one back up. Lol

Just to let everyone know I gotten eaten alive by a NOVA

That's right a NOVA :yuck:

Was about to slit my wrists in shame when I heard the best noise in the world (no not him crashing) a Dump Valve

(Found out from a mate it's a 1.6 turbo)

Guess i'll let him win that 1st round :D
