Was driving home just now, and on the way back the car made a bang sound and now i cant select my gears.

At first i could only get 1st 3rd 5th but now after driving i can only get 5th.
It seems as if the gear select has moved back about an inch and thats why i cant get into 2nd 4th and rev.
When i move the gear stick it feels very soft when pulling it back and doesnt seem to want to get into any other gear apart from 5th.
And were it thinks 5th gear is, its near enough centered in the gear stick housing rather than the top right corner.

Anyone any ideas what the damage could be ?

This is on my HGT punto

Does it go into gears with the engine off?? Or no gears at all?

Just got my car back from having the Clutch master cylinder replaced, but still its grinds going into reverse?

Even with a new clutch the pivot points on the clutch lever might be worn so its not releasing properly. See http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clutch-Fo...CarParts_SM&hash=item19cbe55b87#ht_1610wt_859

To the OP -
  • If the gears select when engine is not running your clutch has failed.
  • If gears wont select engine running or stopped its the gear shift system cables or box under the floor
  • If there is a pool of gear oil under the car you probably need a new gearbox.

cable has broken in the selecter linkage my friend
they even sometimes feel like they havent
took me ages to suss this first time i got a call about it
cheapest solution is a s/h linkage set from the breakers expect to pay £25

obviously make sure gearbox hasnt busted first though

exhaust needs dropping if changing all linkage set by the way so might be wise to let garage do the actual fitting, easily an hours job though if they employ workers rather than monkeys

No but its suspicious. The shifter cables may have been messed about with.

Use a good battery torch to look at the back of the gear box between it and the cabin wall. You should be able to see the two shift cables and levers on the back of the gearbox.

Or get the car towed to the exhaust fitters and get them to sort it out.

Did you ever sort your part seized linkage on top of the box? The piece which seizes is the part which moves across the gate, if it wasn't free'd off it's likely to have broken the cable instead.

Get someone in the car to move the lever around while you watch the cables/linkage move under the bonnet- should make it easier to see what's going on.

exhaust fitters shouldnt have touched the cables
as i say they break
i wouldnt be going gun blazing into their workshop because tyre bars hurt:)
ive replaced 2 in the last 12 months

I never did get it sorted no :(

I did try to look last night but my friend couldnt find the neutral position.
It was 3am and i could just about find it mind haha.

Its at the garage now, i will see what the garage says, hopefully its just a cable snapped linking the bottom 3 gears and nothing too serious has happened.
Will keep updated on what is said :)

Thannks everyone :)

Just rung the garage and they said were the gear linkage is 2 cables come out and what holds those 2 cables in place has snapped.
He said he will see what he can do and try put me on till i can get hold of this fork thing.

Anyone any ideas what this part is so i can ring around rather than saying the fork thing lol

i dont think they have grasped the problem here to be honest
tell him to hold the selecter under the bonnet and get his mate to move the gearknob into gears
he will see that the cable doesnt move because it will have broken on the end of the nipple which is internal to the outer sheaving covering

garage has lent me a car because he got swamped with work yesterday afternoon.
He said all it is, is that clip which holds the cables down because at the minute they are moving about everywhere when im trying to go into gear and he said that nothing should have gone wrong with the gear box

Is he sure it's just the clip? Only the Punto cables are common for the cast end-piece shearing where the clip locates it in the support, which means you'd need a new cable (or two).

Get him to strip and grease that linkage while he's there- only three 13mm bolts to remove the support, then one 17mm nut to allow the seized pin to slide out. Takes 10-15mins total and it'll feel slick and like new afterwards. ;)
