I had this issue. Garage told me that it was from holding the clutch too long therefore causing the on board computer to think that the stop start isn't working. causing the warning light rather than not available. Bearing this in mind when driving I haven't had any more problems

Currently in the process of rejecting my car. Asking for my money back seemed to have got Fiat's attention though.
After having my car for 4 weeks I've now been told that there is a new updated ECU which is supposed to fix several issues:
1. Apparently Start/Stop doesn't work correctly in < 4 degrees (don't ask me why), which can result in warning lights.
2. Holding the car on the clutch for mere seconds on the 1.4 (i.e 2 - 3 seconds, no more) can cause the warning light's (which is the problem I am getting).
It's being fitted to my car early next week so I'll report back if it does fix my issues. To anyone having issues with Start/Stop or related, I'd get your dealer to find out about this updated ECU - it might just sort you out

1. Do you want to freeze in your car every time start and stop kicks in?
2. That's how it works, deal with it. You should never hold a car on the clutch for anything more than just a moment and I mean half a second. You are wearing your clutch for no reason.

When reversing you do need to use the clutch, which is when I keep getting my warning lights. It means you can't reverse for more than a few seconds without getting the warning light (and then having to go back to the dealer to get it reset).
I've no idea what problem #1 is supposed to be, I'm just passing on what my dealer told me
Sorry but controlling a reversing car with the clutch alone (and brake) is the correct technique we learnt when learning to drive! also have you ever been in crawling traffic and been able to do so while jumping straight off the clutch? you would have a bump on your hands for sure.
One thing I do agree with is that resting your hand on a gear stick is very bad practice and shouldn't be done in any gear. The idea you should drive a car any real distance without using some degree of clutch control is perposterous. Finally I live in the pennines, clutch control is not an option, it's a must.

I have also had this issue, but it tends to only really happen if the engine has been running for a long time. Not only that, but I've just found out that after 4months, the car is getting recalled due to airbags.
The airbag thing is just a software issue - should take them as long to resolve as it takes you to drink your dealer's cup of coffee.

I'm back on here because today our start'n'stop warning light came on again! It's been ok for ages, nearly forgot about it, and now it's come on again. I'm talking about the proper warning light (with the '!' in a triangle), not just the "I don't want to" start'n'stop light.
Anybody else have a relapse?

Hi Jim, Yes - we have just collected our car from FIAT service - again - for the same problem - all the lights on. I see that the last time we were here was end of October last year. The thread is up to 33 pages now! The service department admitted that they dealt with three other cars today with the same problem! They are still coming out with the same nonesense of blaming the drivers for holding the car on the clutch for too long, and best of all, "Why not turn off the start stop in traffic" (I guess leave it switched on when on the motorway!!). No fix in sight from FIAT. If this does turn out to be a general recall for new ECU it's going to be VERY expensive - let's hope it is a software fix, and hopefully sometime before the car becomes obsolete. :bang:
NOt to be funny but if you hold the car on the clutch (something which you shouldn't really do) it will set the lights off.
Richard do you know if you have you actually had the software update carried out that D4nny8oy told us about?

The Bulletin itself is at the top of the "recent publications" in the Service News section- they can't fail to see it- and it's NOT a Body Computer update.
I'm guessing they'd all have the latest ECU software which has been proven to cure the issue (as fitted to jeb1's car).
all I can say is insist on them updating yours with the latest software like I mentioned (Service News 10.35.09)- at least it's something, and seeing as the bulletin came out after jeb1's was fixed, I'd say it's a good bet it's the cure.

I chose "I have a start 'n' stop, and have this issue" on mines on got 97 miles on the clock, i've spoke to the fiat dealership (squires gate, blackpool) and they said its probably because of the cold weather, and said wait till the weather warms up and it should start working?

The update which I knew of was released over a year ago now, so every one released since then should have it from the factory. There may have been another one released since then though.
Thing is, I've already told people what they need to do to trace what's causing the faults (and prove whether it's a system issue or accept it's driver-error)...
All the Tech's need to do is record the 4+ pages of diagnostic data regarding the S/S system and read the counters for why it failed to stop, failed to start, etc, then attempt to recreate the fault. If they can't replicate it, return the vehicle to the customer and get them to try. If it fails again, the data can be re-read, and whichever counter has increased by 1 highlights the problem area. It really is that simple, but for some reason, many can't be arsed.
At the very least, ask to speak to the DET, and ask them to show you the data from the ECU regarding the stop/start and what caused the last S/S failure.
I have just downgraded my car from a Jaguar 2.2D Sport Premium (85,00 miles), for a 10 reg Fiat 1.2 POP Stop and Start only 2,300 miles.
I havea problem with this feature. It says "Stop n Start Unavailable".
I have since found a blue wire cut in the wiring loom under the steering column.
I wonder if the previous owner had a problem and the FIAT agents had disconnected it.
I will lookinto it a bit more to see if I can find the "otherend" of the cut wire.

That's not a downgrade, that's an upgrade.
In the manual there is a page that lists all the time when start stop wont work. Like while reversing on a steep hill. Or while the heated rear window is on.
Checked the manual,,,this does not work anytime!.

Good news to report on mine, it didnt work at all when i first got it but the minute it went over 150 miles on the clock its started working now but only when the engine temp is half way on the gauge probs
I found that too. It wont work while the engine is cold.
I did a test in mine earlier. I was going down a hill approaching a queue of traffic and put the car in neutral at 20mph. Start/stop kicked in just before the car stopped. When the traffic started moving a stayed in neutral and rolled down the hill (slow traffic). When the car got above about 10mph the engine started again.
