Stop&start worked on my 1.2 lounge Dualogic from the very first drive when I picked it up from the dealer. Are you keeping your foot on the brake and clutch pedals when you stop? Else it might be a faulty battery as the system won't work unless there is enough power to restart the engine. My car only comes up with that error message if I stop and then put it into reverse straight away, in which case the engine starts immediately and the message appears.

I've had the ss light and triangle come up three times so far (only had it for 2 days). Seems to do it if I hold the clutch for too long on a hill so not too bothered yet.

I would get the battery checked out. When you hold the clutch for too long maybe the power is dropping to a level where the system says "I'd better start the engine now before the battery goes flat" and starts the engine disabling the start&stop system to prevent further drain on the battery.

You're not meant to hold the clutch in on hills with start&stop. That is what causes this issue

I had a feeling it was user error. I've been driving an automatic for the last three years so it's taking me a while to get used to changing gear again. Although the stop start seems to stop me from stalling which is quite helpful!

Quite right, you'll never supposed to hold a car on the clutch on a hill. People do it, but they shouldn't, and since the start and stop is designed for cars being used correctly I daresay it will get confused if you try and hold your car on a hill using the clutch. Stands to reason really doesn't it;)

It always takes a while to get used to gears after you have driven automatic, but it's fun once you get the hang of it again.

Update on my problems - since being back to the dealer in July I haven't seen the warning triangle or the stop/start warning light lit. However I do get the 'Stop / Start Unavailable' message on the dash whenever I go into reverse - anyone else had (have) this?

For obvious reasons, stop n'start is always disabled whilst in reverse.

Until the next time the ignition is turned off and on again. Isn't usually an issue as I normally only reverse when parking up (have to reverse-park at work), however it does happen every time I reverse.

But once out of reverse it still remains unavailable...

this is correct- it will re- enable after you go back into forward motion and have changed into 2nd - i know- i used to obsess about all the minutae of the way it worked-

so if you are parking and use reverse, it disables( with message)- and then put it into 1st to complete manoeuvre it remains disabled- however if you drive off it will re engage after 'normal' use.

all without restarting engine...

(i had the original S/S for 14 months!)

Thanks, that does seem to echo my experiences, generally.

It does occasionally say 'start/stop unavailable' without going into reverse however, and sometimes when start/stop is active, eg waiting at traffic lights, the engine will restart itself after only a few seconds - it used to last much longer, usually it'd never automatically restart. Could this indicate a battery / charging problem?

if you are getting the message on the dashboard without any warning lights, it is perfectly normal for the s/s to become unavailable occasionally- there are that many different factors involved in its operation that it will act differently sometimes-
where your car restarts after a few seconds, this could just indicate a battery under more load than normal, or that the battery needs more charge- most of the S/S behaviour is based around offering the function without compromising the battery.

yours sounds totally fine!

I think you will see, if you take the time to read this thread, that you are not alone. That said, if the evidence of postings on this thread is anything to go by, the rate of problems has slowed down.

I ended up with a car on which s/s was deleted as an option and I have to say I'm not disappointed.

we asked for this to be disconnected permanently and was told no also told some old rubbish that if you reverse for more than 15 seconds the warning light comes on wonder how b.s.m get on teaching people to drive lol

You can't just "disconnect" a major part of functionality like start&stop. It doesn't work like that.

Slowed down - possibly, but not gone away. We have had the S&S Unavailable light and General Failure on our 2 month old vehicle. The Fiat agent has reset the lights and informed us that it is due to 'driving tecnique' that the lights are coming on. Specifically we are 'riding the clutch'. I insisted that is not the case. His recommendation is to 'switch off the S&S when in heavy stop start traffic'!! He also admitted that the dealership had had two other cars in for the same problem that day.
