I would like to put my thoughts in!

AOL is a known bastard working with Firewall/routers. AOL do not pass any encryptred traffic across thier network above 3DES either so it can be a real pain in the arse for some SSL conversations. So, first suggestion, ditch AOL and get one of the top three ADSL providers in the UK (as documented in recent UK survey) BT (1), Virgin (2), Demon (3).

Secondly, if you are having Wireless issues it could be because another router is within your vicinity using the same frequency as you are. To be honest any router (Vigor, Cisco, Dlink) will be more powerful than your netgear! Although Wireless shows 12 possible channels (13 in USA) there are really only 3 available. I would suggest trying a different channel (1, 7 or 12) and see if that fixes it. If it does then someon near you probably has wireless, if this is the case you should hide your SSID on the router (put it in manually on the client) and also use WEP encryption otherwise someone could jump on your broadband and use your bandwidth.

Thirdly if you think someone else does have Wireless near you...change the damn password on your router from the default.

That is all.

Yeah, is your router through the ehternet or USB?

Liam

Its through ethernet (a usb ethernet thingy)

ISP is aol, but parents pay for that  so dont want to start arguing with them plus my step dad swears by it so i wouldnt get anywhere :(

Its a Netgear DG384G or something like that? and well in the storm it was useless (despite the fact it was all wired in not using wireless  :()

I wasn't totally clear in my question, is it through your network card or simple USB port?

I suggest getting all the instructions out and removing ll the software and trying a fresh install.

I'm confused here, do you share the connection with rents?

Right so your netgear takes the phoneline and then uses ports to distribute BB to 4 possible PC's?

You connect your computer to the router/modem using a CAT5 cable?

This post contains eBay links which may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.
Why not just buy a real NIC for £10 from PC world?

Might sort your problems. USB devices often require more computer resources then PCI Cards and it might be a simple case of the USB device not having enough power to keep up with your demands, then you have to possibility of too many Interrupt Requests from the USB Controllers.

This will be evident if your machine is the only one connected Via that USB device and is also the only machine having problems.

If not try a different set of drivers for everything, in some cases older drivers work better then newer ones and if still no joy try a different router.
