Hiya there
Are there any FF members using Virgins broadband service? [cable]

We have just signed up to it after finally being pushed to another provider by the poor service of Orange, and frequent downtime.

We have the cable installed, and the modem, but are awaiting the wireless router arriving.

Its supposed to be a 10mb connection, how do I find out if its running at that? when its plugged in it only shows a 'local network' connection

so, is anyone on it, and if so, whats the equipment and service like? any downtime at all?

thanks:)

Oh, as for service - well I have no complaints, and I am a heavy user as well, already hit over 200GB of data for March; I do avoid peak times though, 4pm til 9pm - then FUP comes into play.

LOL i work for Virgin Media. Never had a problem with my 20 meg all good a little slow but what do you expect for £1 a month:p

What router they giving you then?

I dont know, all I know is that it comes free with the 10mb connection, it hasnt arrived yet

I just want to know that our current set up will be able to connect to it:

home office, we have 3 wired PC's, and one wireless laptop

bedroom pc, wired

bedroom pc, wireless

all but one wired pc's are into a hub, then to the orange livebox, one pc is direct from livebox

wireless pcs run from the livebox

obviously, our livebox is still in use, until the virgin router arrives and then we will also cancel BT and Orange, and get the home number changed over.

been with virgin media for over 2 years, full package, had a few minor issues in the first 6 months, but from there on has been fine, use their modem with a d-link wireless router, totally ok for my modest 2mb service

Well, our venture into using Virgin Broadband didnt last long

I was very impressed with the speed in which they came and connected us up, out within a couple of days, and installed cable and modem

Engineer left modem with us, to connect and set up ourselves, easy?? yes it really should have been, surely just a case of plug it in?

My pc setting werent right, I tried lots but eventually was embarrased into using tech support, at £1 a minute, by christ it cost me £4 to restart my pc FFS, call was at least £20 worth & still no joy.

Day later [we stil had Orange to use] I plugged the virgin back in, now working - ? !.

We were promised delivery of router, two days after installation, this didnt happen.

Numerous calls to Virgin, passed from one number to another, from one dept to another, revealed that the deal we were offered initially they had no record of, and the router hadnt even been ordered, the broadband was still 4mb and not 10mb as promised, "your area cant get 10mb yet" they said

By now, we had already been in touch with Orange to cancel, as well as BT as we were going to use the Virgin phone, and keep our original number.

Few days later, still no router, so good job Orange was still working, funny - Orange had suddenly upped our speed?!, and had no downtime since we request cancelling, amazing huh?

A nice english girl from the UK phoned us on friday just gone, from Orange, asking us why we were cancelling, at this point, we are furious with Virgin, "I can make you an offer" she said.

The lovely, easy to understand english girl told us if we keep with Orange, we would get the next 6 months free of charge, and keep the same package we had but at £9.99 instead of £17.99

Virgin router arrived today, didnt open it, and have remained with Orange.

We have decided to stay with Orange, until November, if there has been any downtime affecting our home run business, then we might consider Virgin again, as the line is in, but in the meantime, not happy at all with them.

Bad customer service, sick of being passed from one place to another, so bye bye Virgin.

Orange is still up to speed, and no downtime, FINGERS CROSSED!!

you see i left orange (mobile phones) after 10 years as a customer coz the customer service had gone pants, and the network was for ever going off for about 8 hours at a time, usually a weekday, 9-5, i just had to bite the bullet and leave, got a deal with o2 they couldnt beat and not really looked back. It was sooooo much easier when the only call centre they had was full of geordie/north eastern people, now they have outsourced to india i had trouble with the simple stuff (paying bills, customer service).

With virgin i havent had to phone them since November, when i caled and arranged the lot in 10 minutes
