Re: Airbag - will it go off

Is it 3dr or 5 dr dont matter which as I'm not prejudice :p but the 3dr get more problems because the passenger seat has to be slid back and fore all the time  useually you can put the light out by disconnecting and reconnecting the conectors under the seat and the passenger side connectors seem to be more the fault than the drivers side try it (y)

I have just found that My Schumi doesn't have the passenger seat sensor, Fiat just eliminate it!!

:D

Airbag update

Carried out the airbag failure procedure as detailed in the Stilo guides, still the red dashboard indicator lights. Even removed the metal crimp connectors from the plastic orange connector housing and joined wires manually, still no joy.

I guess next stop is the Fiat dealers to see if fault can be cleared unless there is anything else I can try?

Re: Airbag update

It can take a few engine starts before the fault stored might be cleared but I guess you would have done that already.

Sure it's not the OCS sensor? Did it start to happen with people sitting in the passenger seat?

The warning light is saying there's something it doesn't like about the airbag electronics circuit so if you've tried everything else then it might be airbag ECU so it'll need a diagnostic to find out just what is giving it the hump

 why? I wouldnt take it to Fiat dealer if you have removed terminals(or damaged them)as no dealer/technician would touch your car now without fitting a new loom.
Fiat technicians are under instruction never to cut terminals/solder or join in any other method any part of the airbag wiring loom/squib on any Fiat.

Re: Airbag update

Thanks for the input chaps,

As I said, I bought it at a local car auctions nearly a week ago and to be fair the auctioneer did advise that the red warning light appears on the instrument panel accompanied by the text airbag failure- engine stop in the display window. It also states 'service due' so I guess a trip to the dealers is well in order.

When I said I removed the crimped terminals from the orange plug I gently prized the small retaining lugs back and eased the terminal from the plug- nothing has been cut, soldered or damaged in any way and can easily be restored to its original condition. Although I should mention that judging from the amount of insulation tape and cable ties around the wires this is certainly not the first time an attempt to remedy this problem has been made.

Unfortunately occupancy of the passenger seat makes no difference to the airbag warning indicator- the warning has been on constantly since purchase.

Cheers again

Re: Airbag update

Phew!!!! lucky for you as loom is around £400 & its a full interior/dash out job.

If youtouch the surface of the passenger seat ca you feel any hard lumps on it,sure sign OCS mat is F*cked.

If you got car at good price from auction then anoter £40-50 to get errors read & put service light out isn't that bad is it;)

Re: Airbag update

Just one more thing. Inside the orange female connector there appears to be a metal contact that shorts out the brown and blue airbag wires when the male and female connectors become disconnected. Anyone know what that is about? or have I misinterpreted?

Re: Airbag update

You should be able to see the mileage by pressing the MENU button once.

Also, there's an orange airbag connector in the boot, just inside the left-hand side pocket where you access the rear lights. I found this when I had the same airbag fault. Tried everything with the connectors under the seats without any luck. Re-seated the connector in the boot and viola, no more airbag warning light.

Mind you, just come back from France and now have a Engine Fault warning. I can't win.

Re: Anyone Had a Prolem With Airbag Light

Theres a new procedure/parts for underseat wiring on stilos but its only to be carried out by DET's.

I think i've been told the same...

I'm waiting (about 10 days) for my local FIAT dealer to order in this "new" part which should eradicate the problem for good. Apparently its a newly designed product to replace the faulty loom

I'll let you know how I get on once it's arrived and fitted.

By the way... does anyone know if the Airbag warning light is an MOT failure as mine needs a new MOT and it's looking like i'll have to get it done before the part arrives.

When I took mine in to get serviced they said that the Airbag light was an MOT fail, though I'm not so sure, cos Airbags aren't required- so what's the problem if it's not working?
I fixed it using Deck's method anyway. (y)

Re: Anyone Had a Prolem With Airbag Light

Just a thought. Have you checked the rear airbag connector, which is attached to the left-hand rear wheel arch (when looking in the boot)? In my Stilo, there's an orange airbag connector located by the rear wheel arch. If you take out the left-hand compartment in the boot (similar to when you are accessing the light cluster), you will see an airbag connector attached to the wheel arch.

Give that a go.

Re: Anyone Had a Prolem With Airbag Light

I've had my Airbag light come on for a while then went off, now its come back on again. It seems to be a common problem with cars but surely they've made it as a way to make money jst for someone to look at it then switch it off. An easy £100. Anyone else had this problem???

It's usually a problem with wires under passenger seat. My garage tried to sort it out by re-routing the wires slightly (said they were under too much strain??) then wrapped them in nasty sticky duck tape. (n) Light/message came on again after a year, so i took tape off and teased out the wires again, didnt disconnect anything and didn't re-wrap in tape. Amazed to find this has worked so far! But those wires look a bit fragile so I'll ask passengers with big feet to sit on othe r side in the back!

Re: Anyone Had a Prolem With Airbag Light

Do the spray first -that costs around £4 for a can. do exactly like it says in my guide in the Stilo Guides section

If that doesn't work then it will very likely be the OC sensor but that's £100+ so it's up to you if you want to get a diagnostic done at Fiat first to find out exactly what's making the airbag warning trigger.

If the warnings go off when someone moves about on the seat then it's most likely the OC sensor. I've also done a guide on how to change that

Sometimes taking the sensor out and straightening it out seems to have done the trick as it gets creased up with time. Sometimes putting some reinforcing underneath to stop it creasing up can do the job too.

Be aware though that the air bag warning is saying there's something up with the system and there can be lot of other things that can cause that like other airbag connectors. But, as said, if passenger movement causes it to go off then it's highly likley to be the OCS

Re: Anyone Had a Prolem With Airbag Light

I had this problem a couple of days ago...........
followed the guide and all fixed now for the price of a can of contact cleaner!!! Yes get in.

A huge thankyou to the author of the guide, you know who you are.

A word of advice to anyone doing the fix, do all three connectors, passenger and drivers seat and boot. first time i only did driver seat as that's the seat that was moved immediately prior to Beep Beep Beep and it didn't fix the problem.

Fingers crossed it will stay fixed!

Re: Anyone Had a Prolem With Airbag Light

There is no loom, stilos have a one piece loom however if your refering to above post (OCS mat) this is around £110 + fitting/diag etc. The only other component is underseat wiring kits but these are for level 3 DETs to fit only.

Re: Anyone Had a Prolem With Airbag Light

I had looked at the stilo guides and i had already Used the contact cleaner on a few occasions which didn't cure the problem.

How ever i didn't know about the two airbag connections in the boot. Yep Two, one either side of the compartments leading to the rear clusters. I have just Cleaned these connections and so far so good. No airbag failures!

All i did this time was disconnect all of them at the same time Gave them a squirt including opening up the connectors at the rear. I really drowned them this time... left them for 10mins and reconnected... after two starts the code has cleared.

Thanks again Boys and girls!
