Re: airbag failure

aye i had a look but there was nothing on the foam and no wire so presumibliy hes ripped it out thinking it would fix, so i need to get just an OCS from fiat, any idea on prices?

Re: airbag failure

i got myself an OCS, took it from the a seat i got from a salvage yard and connected it into the female connector block, but still the airbag failure light comes on =[
is there any way of finding out where the trouble lies, ive followed the guide, got an OCS and have not had any luck
also, i only noticed this today, the key switch for the passenger airbag on the passenger side of the dash, if this was turned off then would that make a difference or does it still do all the same checks
also i was told (not sure if its true but may as well ask) that even if it was the missing OCS and i reconnected it, that i would still have to go to the dealer for them to put the light off even thought the system is ok
your help is very much appreciated as ive its first MOT on thur =S

Re: airbag failure

Had the JTD tell me to stop and turn engine off due to Airbag Failure... Mrs WNWL then confessed to moving the seat back earlier in the day, so I ignored it... it went out eventually

Cleaning the car a few night later noticed stray piece of insulating tape on the wiring connections to the drivers seat, now hoping its not been messed with before... my forum alias comes from the 1.6's habit performing its entire repetoire of warning messages and lights at regular intervals, hope the JTD aint gonna start doing likewise now :(

Re: airbag failure

My JTD did a similar thing when, on the motorway, my wife started kneeling on the seat whilst getting something out of the back. It gave the all clear once she sat down again (y)

I was quite impressed with the technology but would have been even more impressed with:

BEEP BEEP BEEP "Tell your passenger to sit down and refasten the seat belt!" :D

Would prefer Mr T snickers ad style "Sit still you crazy FOOLE!!!" audiable warning instead lol :D

Seriously though, local Fiat dealer did say that subsequent owner of my old 1.6 bought it in to them shortly after purchase with Airbag Warning Light problems... I got by disconnecting the battery and re-connecting it after 10 mins but suspected OCS replacement was imminent...

jOnny, like T' comments, if you don't get it sorted properly, you can't rely on the gear to do the business and give you the ENCAP 4 Star treatment when you need it most...

Re: Airbag Failure warning

Here's a crash test of a Stilo at only 30mph.

The "dummy" has his seat belt on but his mother can probably still recognise his face afterwards thanks to the airbag

The driver's airbag is a very clever top class two stage deployment depending on severity of impact so hence the need for 4 wires

Re: Airbag System Failure

hey, i had done every connector and double chekd all the connections, one under the driver seat, one under the passenger seat, and one above each rear wheel arch and i also went to the extent of getting a new OCS (occupant clarification sensor) in the passenger seat and still had this airbag problem. didnt know about the connector above the glovebox, once i hit that the light went off, was a great day to say the least, lol. just check all your connections! i know of 5 and that your OCS is connected and working

Re: Airbag System Failure

You might want to check the connections to the "disable front airbag" switch. The day I turned the key into this, was the day the airbag failure startet popping up whenever I hit a speed bump hard (no problems since I've got Eibachs - but it shakes up the electrics).

Quick fx for "airbag Failure" "Stop Engine"

Right then, I have done this fix to all three stilo's in my family and since then we haven't had 1 "Airbag Failure" "Stop Engine" since.

First go to Maplins or Halfords and buys some electrical conductive paint. It costs between £5 and £10.

Locate the orange terminals under each seat. On stilo's with the sliding rear seats they also have an Airbag weight sensor terminal in orange just the same as the front seats.

Next unconnect the terminals.

Paint some of the conductive paint onto the male end of the terminals with a small paint brush. The type you would find in a stone chip paint repair pencil or a cotton bud.

Next while the paints is still wet put the connector back together.

Give it 10 minutes to dry and wallar. No more "Airbag Failure" "Stop Engine"

Easy

I think what happens is that as the paint dry's it sticks 2 sides of the terminals together permanantly and thus stops the warning. But yes you can still pull them apart if necessary.

Before I did this the system was always going off especially in the Multiwagon with sliding rear seats.

It maybe worthwhile spraying some switch cleaner in first and letting it dry off but I honestly can't remember if I did before using the paint as it is now probably 6 months since we last had a failure.

Before that I was always spraying the dambed things with switch cleaner which I must say did work for a few weeks before the dredded "BEEP BEEP BEEP" "AIRBAG FAILURE" "STOP ENGINE".

Cool eh.

Re: airbag failure

Had this for 18 months now but am too stingy to buy a new sensor (about £100 apparently). We have found that if the passenger sits well back in the seat the sensor is fine and the dreaded light stays out.
Works for us !

Cheers

Re: Airbag Light

Ok. I may have to bite the bullet & go to a Fiat dealer and have this sorted. The only problem is I havent got silly money to play around with-struck for cash. Are we looking at .5 labour charge to clear any potential fault codes that may be stored? Im pretty sure though its to do with the wiring under the seat because it was previously cured by disconnecting & electrical contact cleaner on the connectors.

On the upside I work for a garage, on the downside it is a main dealership that isnt Fiat and they don't have any suitable diagnostic equipment for my Stilo.

Mine was just the same as yours - worked fine for a while after a spray of switch cleaner but eventually would fail again. Then the light stayed on and never went out no matter how much i sprayed the contacts.

Yep, it turned out to be the OCS. I have no idea how or why, but there we go.

Re: Airbag Light

Hi There,
Had a similar fault as you with the airbag light coming on nearly evrytime i started the car, 3dr version and usually after seat had been moved.
used to slide the tray out and wiggle the connectors about a bit and it would go, but after a while they just stayed on.
About 2 months ago i slid the tray out under the seat...choped the blocks off and replaced them with bullet connectors, Have not had a single warning since. :D:DYIPEEE!!!!!
Only now i have the thing cutting power now and again so its going for sale very soon..got to go as the wife dont trust it no more :(.

Anyway hope this little bit of info helps???

Re: Airbag warning Light

Just get the orange connector under the seats soldiered together by an autoelectrician. Costs about £ 30 for the lot. No more airbag problems, EVER.:slayer::slayer::slayer:

Re: Airbag warning Light

I had an airbag issue come up on the commute home today, its not the 'beep beep' stop engine one but you know the little air bag light on the speedo? The one that flashes for a bit on start up then it goes, that one! It started to flash intermittently for 4 seconds on the way home. The handbook says its a passenger side airbag issue and to go to the Fiat Dealer immediately.

Has anyone else had this? Should taking the steps in deck's guide solve it?

Re: Airbag warning Light

If you mean the amber flashing one then that might be normal if it flashed for a few secs then went off again. It means it's interrogating the OCS as it can detect movement there. Perhaps you had something heavier on the passenger seat- a curry special for dinner?

lol very funny! so does it mean the passenger side air bag would still work? there was no one on the seat, so should I try and fix the tray under the seat so it doesn't wobble about?
