Regular occurance with my JTD and my 1.6. I get under the seat, disconnect and reconnect. Works everytime, somebody will tell you how dangerous this can be but when you see the dealer do exactly the same thing then I wont waste my time taking it to them. If they effected a permanent fix then I would.

There is a permanent fix as per dealer issued service bulletin, suggest you take it to a good dealer.Doing what you are doing will only loosen the terminals more & more.

I had the very same thing done to my 02 Stilo, however the light still comes one now and again, disconnecting the loom underneath the seat seems to do the trick...

Re: Airbag Failure

(n) Had same fault myself last week, opened tray under passenger seat to find de-icer and 'beep beep' Air bag Failure - Stop engine, fiddled round with connections under seat, no better, turned passsenger air bag off, still same. went to work with dash message panicking, checked all connections under both seats, still faulty.....going to airport in two days time!!!!! Rang round a couple off dealers and found on to look at it next day (59.95 plus Vat), noticed on way home light on but message stopped. pulled down flap in top of glovebox, quick fiddle with yellow loom and all cured, still ok next day so cancelled garage visit, Done about 600 miles over weekend and no problems(y)

Re: airbag light

 Theres a drop down panel in top of lower glovebox, fastened to this is a yellow harness, try disconnecting/reconnecting this....with ignition off of course. worked on my car about a month ago (panel drops down sometimes on my car and shoving stuff in glovebox must upset connection!)(y)

Re: airbag light

You can mess about with the wiring under the seat as much as you want but the light will come on again soon enough, connector repair bulletins were issued to dealers for DET/approved techs to repair unless this is done it will come on again.

Re: airbag light

The system goes through a self-test upon switching the ignition on,both lights should go out after 3/4 seconds(the yellow passenger one will flash during this duration or stay on if passenger airbag has been previously disabled)if either of them come on during driving it means there is a fault.

Re: Airbag Warning

this would be more a technical sections question...

But yes make sure you take it back to the garage and get them to replace the OCS sensor which is the one in the seat. There was a recent thread and guide made how to sort this problem out but your looking a few hundred quid im affraid if the garage dosent stump it up!

I'll go dig out the thread and post a link to the guide! (y)

EDIT:

heres the thread have a read through this, covers most info about airbag sensors! https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo-technical/61829-air-bag-difference.html

& heres the guide mate, hope it helps:

Re: Airbag Warning

i know the feeling the airbag sensors are very common for this on the stilo im affraid! The things to try are:

Taking the fuse out and putting a new un in - or just making sure its in properly!

Check all the sensors under the seats - maybe disconnect and reconnect!

Check the sensor in bottom glove box, u'll see a little pannel on the top when you stick your head in there - maybe disconnect and reconnect this!

And then disconnecting the battery to reset the ecu and see if that dose the job!

But by the way you've noticed its when anybody touches the passengers seat i would put a bet on its your OCS sensors in the seat pannel!

Re: Airbag Warning

That'll be the seat OCS sensor without a doubt. Full explanation of how to change it is in the Stilo guides.

Turning off the passenger air bag won't affect the warnings, you'll still get them as soon as a weight goes on the seat. Seimens French design, French never did get on with Italians

Only thing you can do to stop the warnings whilst you're waiting for a replacement is to rip out the OCS sensor and, still keeping it connected, stick it under the seat

Re: Airbag Warning

Just fixed mine, so hope this helps...

The p/side seat base OCS sensor was gone. Could feel through the leather that the sensor mat was crumpled as they are not very well protected.

Tried the airbag on/off key too and every other fuse, no joy. My fault was present all the time whether someone sitting on the seat or not.

Bought a seat base or "relief kit" as it is called for 215 euro. Fitted it myself to avoid dealer labour charge as my car is out of warranty, and you just know they will charge you a good few hours for it. Actually most will have to get an upholsterer in to do the job (for leather seats especially) to refit the cover as its pretty tricky to get a perfect fit. The seat cusions are tailored (built-up with strips of extra foam) to the leather you see as no two cuts of cow are the same & it also stretches through use. You might get away with this is you have cloth seats.

If you have to buy this seat base and are going to do it yourself make sure you order the correct one. Let me re-phrase that, make sure the Fiat dealer orders the correct one for you. There are loads of different types i.e 3dr/5dr for cloth/leather, for models with front and side/rear airbags. I.e No seat base is the same, they seem to work with the rest of the system present. Would others agree me on this?

The guide on this site was a good help for me, though I find these jobs always throw some surprises at you.

Anyway, how come garage won't cover it under warranty? That don't sound too fair. Give em hell!!

Stil 1.9JTD Airbag Problem (a common theme)

Folks,

Need your help before going to the dealer. I get an intermittant airbag warning (you know the one, red symbol on the dash, Airbag Failure warning on the Multifuction Display the usual 'Stop Engine' warning) Now I know what you are going to say, but please read on. The odd thing about this message/warning is that it only comes on when the car has been warmed sufficiently by the sun (reads 24 degrees + on the Mutlifunction display). So the message only comes on during the day when its warm. Not on a morning or on an evening. Just during the day. Now if I drive along and allow the car to cool down (usually by opening the windows) after a while the temparature drops and the warning disappears. WTF??? I have checked the connections and they seem sound. So whats going on? Any Ideas? My car is a 1.9 JTD 02 plate.

p.s. It has NOTHING to do with the passenger seat (I dont get the yellow flashing light on the dash) Just the red one (you know when u turn on the ignition it illuminates for a few seconds then goes out (just above the warning light to say u haven't got your seatbelt fastened))

Re: Stil 1.9JTD Airbag Problem (a common theme)

I had the same problem, had to have a new computer for the airbag at a cost of £280ish  , although my was covered by warranty so that was lucky (y)

Oh joy! Did they tell u exactly what the problem was? Did it happen when the car got warm too? Big job? How long it take? Questions, questions, questions!
They said it was the airbag ecu, yep some days it was fine then after a 1/2 hour or more it would come on, they had to order the part in as they did not stock it, but only took 15 mins ( after a 3 day wait for the part) just a case of unplugging one and plugging the other one in.
Not saying this is the problem but sounds exactly the same, had it to auto electricans 5 times before Fiat found it straight away, they have had a few cars in with it

Re: Warning light: ASR adn Airbag Failure

so what do anyone suggest i do, can it be the abs sensor that is faulty or not, please help:slayer:

Don't know about the ASR light. Have had it once or twice myself but it just went away.

There is loads of helpful advice on here about the OCS passenger airbag sensor which is the worst culprit.

Old type sensor under the seat gets damaged and needs to be replaced. Updated type has better protection against damage from fat passengers with keys in their back pockets:D

Sensor cost me 215 euro approx. Fitting would be 2-3 hours, i'm sure "T14086" will know(y) ? Depends on whether you have leather or not. Deckchairs fitting advice and pictures are good for the fabric seats.

Fitting would be 2-3 hours

Dealer gets 48mins to fit so if taking to dealer expect hour labour.Deck done the job within the hour. Not a hard job to do but you need the right tools, torx bits etc.

Honestly the ASR light could be so many different things difficult to guess.Could be sensor but would be wise to get errors read as a guide before changing parts on a whim.
