General  AC Decompressing?

General  AC Decompressing?

Your supposed to use a refrigerant recovery machine and take ithe recovered gass to a licensed waste facilities

The cheapest solution is to drive the car to a aircon specialist and get them to do it for you

Or if there's one very local a mobile service

Its the only safe legal way

Attach it to an ac machine and suck out the gas. That’s the only legal and safe way to degass (decompress) the system.

There are people who will open up a joint in the system and deliberately let the gas leak out, or they will push one of the fill valves in to release the gas but the pressure is so high that it can cause some serious damage.

The gas is heavier than air so will displace all the oxygen in the area leading to potential asphyxiation and breathing problems.

The escaping gas will rapidly drop in temperature when released and can cause severe freeze burns and even frost bite.

The pressure of the escaping gas can also cause injury and damage. Kinda like sticking a screwdriver into an aerosol can.

But if the system isn’t working because of a leak somewhere then chances are there is no need to degass the system if all the gas has already leaked out.

LOL. The big fin pancake radiator thingy i thought was an oil cooler. has two pipes at the bottom to lossen. So before i did them i got my self a bottle of water! Not sure why! Well when i released the first pipe the green yellow stuff is not good. I had a full in your face blast! I needed to bathe my eyes with the bottle of water as it F**king STINGS!

So let this is be a warning to someone who dosen't know what it is like me!🫣 Get it done professionally! I think God was looking after me this afternoon!

PAG46 AC OIL with UV dye, is technically non harmful, safety data sheets say if in contact with eyes wash with loads of clean water I’d keep washing them for ages with gallons of water.

If irritation persists you’re going to have to go to A&E.

It’s possible the pressure of the blast may have also pushed grit or other debris into your eyes and you might have given yourself a corneal abrasion.

As someone who has twice had bits of metal picked out of my eyes from grinder I would strongly suggest getting seen sooner rather than later (if you have to) because the pain only gets worse.

But yeah…. Don’t do that.

Thanks for advise ive cleaned them well with the bottle of water. Then i went straight in the shower! Its more like getting sun lotion or shampoo in your eyes im all good! You'd think they'ed put black and yellow tape stripes or tags or something on!?

In electrical work we put tags on stuff! Like safety earth do not disconnect!

There is usually a general warning sticker somewhere under the bonnet but they don’t generally expect people to go randomly disconnecting things.

You can’t really put stickers the full length of the ac circuit the cold on one side causes a lot of condensation which would would get into the glue, the heat on other parts would soften the glue and the hot cold cycle of the parts being used and and ac turned off when the engine stops would likely cause all the stickers to fall off in no time.

Generally ac pipes are pretty obvious as they are usually the only solid aluminium pipes that run around the engine bay. The only other similar pipes are found in hydraulic power steering pipes.

Glad you’re ok just be extra cautious of any eye irritation in case some grit or grime has got in your eyes.

On the plus side the if dye in the oil means if you stand under a uv light you can see if you have washed it all out lol

We put tags at the connection in electrical work you think the same might apply? No worries though. You never cut a cable unless you can trace end to end! (y)

You say that but not in every electrical item would you label what it is.

In electric cars they do tag the high voltage cables especially as some have as high as 700volt systems, but they don’t label every bundle of wires, the wires themselves make it pretty obvious. I suppose if you are disconnecting a pipe from a ac condenser then it should be reasonable to expect they might be ac pipes.

Honestly though just lucky that you didn’t get more hurt as AC gas and the pressure it is under is pretty dangerous stuff.

Look up high pressure injection injuries caused by AC gas, not that uncommon and can easily lead to loss of limb.
(I won’t post up pictures you can go an unleash that horror on yourself if you want to)

No we only put it on main or equipotential earths. When it went off It was the same as letting my SUP board down!

Seek medical advice re eyes!

Seek medical advice re eyes!
Just for peace of mind

@Baggey has done everything they need to do as per the COSH sheets for PAG 46 and UV Dye. There is nothing harmful as such in there, and washing out the eyes thoroughly was the correct thing to do.

as per my previous advice if irritation persists seek medical attention, the main concern being that grit or some other debris might have also gotten into the eye at speed and caused an abrasion to the cornea.
