I read it as 'Alternate Grammar', though no idea if it is really called that - makes it easier when wanting to do áéíóú.

EDIT - ok, now looked on Google - real name is Alternate Graphic - makes sense now

Wierd, I knew it stood for alt graphics, but never took any notice really I always assumed it was the same as Alt.

it is the same as pressing ctrl and alt together (except that when you press alt gr and delete it won't reboot your pc or do anything in Windows NT like locking the workstation etc...)
