Hi people.

My Multipla started to make a brief, high pitched squeal when under heavy load (going up hill etc) around the 2500 rpm mark about 2000 miles ago. Over the weekend, it has deteriorated and is making a horrible multi pitched whining noise at all speeds of accelerating.

I'm suspecting it's the turbo vanes touching the casing and need a new turbo.

When I bought the car about 4 months ago (11000 miles), there was an invoice for a turbo at £470+ £120 labour dated 18 months and 15000 miles ago included in the wallet. To me, this seems far too early for the turbo to fail.

When I take it to a garage, I was going to ask them to flush the intercooler and check the oil supply to the turbo. Is there anything else that can cause such a premature demise of the turbo?

Also does anyone have one new or second hand?

Regards

James.

Turbo's aren't normally a problem on the Multi, the JTD is well proven and pretty robust.
As regards causes, I'd have to go with extended oil changes/maybe combined with oil filter becoming clogged and the bypass letting all manner of crap through.

Agree with your thoughts about flushing the intercooler and checking the oil supply, however if the turbo has sufficient play for the vanes to contact the housing, I'd expect some oil to be coming through and showing as blue smoke?

If the turbo vanes were to touch the casing, total failure would ensue very shortly after. The speed of the spinning turbine would generate plenty of heat at the point of contact.

Have you checked the intercooler and inlet ducting for splits or loose clamps? It could well be that what you're hearing is the inlet charge escaping. As you say the turbo has been replaced, the ducting may not have been refitted correctly.
