Hi,

Recently over the 100k miles mark and my 1.9 D punto van is having a few problems.

Rough idle
Sometimes cuts out when slowing down or waiting in traffic (starts up straight away)
Engine management light comes on sometimes while driving, usually when sowing down or slightly laboured a gear. (goes of when you re-start engine).

Checked forum and got a few ideas to sort out, change fuel filter, clean idle control valve, check lose hoses/connectors etc.

Main one is crank sensor, most post ive read mention the JTD not the plain old 1.9 D. Is there on fitted to the 1.9 D, if so can anyone point me in the right direction to it and will it slove my problem?

Many thanks.

Just nipped out in the van and problem is much worst than I thought as it was cutting out loads with the stop start town driving and really rough at idle, hence the cutting out. Electric power steering motor saved me a few times.

My drive to work is almost all dual carriage way so didnt realise how bad it was!

Any ideas before I get the codes read somewhere?

For the costs of getting the codes read you could DIY with a laptop pc.

Fuel filter is a possible if its old. Does a diesel have an idle control valve? Unlikely as it has no throttle.

Its not smoking and I always check oil and water etc, change oil evey 7k.

Its a shame as put 55k on this van in just over 2 years and its only cost me 4 new tyres and a section of exhaust down pipe from the exhaust manifold.

Does always fail emissions on mot but redex and a thrashing shorts it out. Probably because I drive like a grannie most of the time to save on fuel.

Quick update, I had to go out again (don't ask) and now the engine has warmed up it cuts out less, although it did cut out on me a couple of times wasn't as bad as when it was cold.

Possible MAF sensor issue? when was it last replaced? But a code reading would be a best start.

Thanks for the replies. Maf sensor never replaced to my knowledge (is there on fitted as its a standard 1.9d not the JTD) and although I do drive slow I mainly do journeys where am sat at 60 -70 in 5th gear so build up of crap could be a possibility.

Will check over the weekend and post on forum, have to bite bullet and take for code reading if cant find anything.

i would suggest that if indeed it had one but unfortunately they dont always show up as faulty with basic code readers
during the cold days of working on ahem corsas i always found substitution with a known good maf to be the quickest way to confirm or deny
i also had limited success with cleaning the wire with brake cleaner too
sorry never done the fiat diesels ,dont like diesel fuel on my hands so only do trucks out of necessity

Had a quick look at air intake, all fine and am sure there is no MAF sensor on the 1.9 D.

Opened the bottom of fuel filter to get any crap out and checked for lose hoses.

Its like the problem is slowly getting worst as getting more juddery as driving as well.

Checked the forum and going to check EGR valve and pipe work, may block it off?

Also I will admit I am new to diesels so starting to think it could be an injector gone/blocked etc gone what are the symptoms for this and how can you check?

A gone injector would cause bad black smoke all the time from the exhaust and smell of unburt fuel, a injector not working will make the engine run all the time with a missfire, runing on 3 cylinders would be more than likely undriveable.

is it still TEMP related ( better when warmed-up..??) ,
does it start on 4 cyls hot and cold..??,
if so it's unlikely to be injectors,
could be EGR..?? , like you that's uncharted territory..!!,
good luck,
Charlie
