Hi,

My other halfs punto (mk1 1.2 16v 85 ELX) has blown it's head gasket. I'm failing to remove the cam cover. I removed the cover (12 in the pic below) I then tried to get a socket in to remove 11. I purchased some long reach 1/4" drive sockets to get the depth over the cap heads on the bolts (11 in pic) and to get through the hole but the 10mm socket doesn't fit over the bolt and a 11mm doesn't fit trough the hole. Can anyone tell me what size the bolt heads are? Also the bottom of the HT leads have melted and snapped off over the spark plugs so I can't get them out, any ideas?

Thank you in advance, you may save my sanity. I have the bad feeling they are allen/hex bolts but it is too dark to check.

Ahh it appears that the bolts require a special spline tool looking into the holes. I'm used to '90s Japanese car where every bolt has a hex head, I'm finding this car infuriating with it's requirement of special tools. (n)

Where can I get this tool, and can I use something else?

Thanks.

Thanks Dave, do you know what size ribe bit I need?

Yes, I'm going to have a go at making my own timing tools as I don't want to spend the money if I can help it! Do people have an alternative for the special tool required to keep the tappets in when pulling the 'cylinder head extension'?

Thanks.

i made bucket holders out of angle iron on them metal shelves you get all over the place.
i used 4 bits of equal dowel for getting pistons all the same hight.
but the lockers i bought proper ones off www.shop4parts.co.uk they dont cost a lot.

i got a whole set of draper pro ribe bits off ebay for about £15, i think arc gots some too but for less

I will get some ribe bits from my local tool shoppie tomorrow. I have some sheet steel lying around from another job to make the 'bucket holders'.

Can I remove the 'head extension' with the spark plugs still in as I can't get the buggers out?

Cheers.

Thanks Dave, why do I need to know where the pistons are to remove the head?

Oh that is going to be an issue, sorry for being a bit slow but why do they all need to be level before I take it apart? Is it so the cams are orientated correctly?

I will be taking the cam shafts out to have the head skimmed anyway so they will be moved around anyway.

Thanks for all the help :D

This is one unusual engine, should be interesting to take apart, I will have to try and remove the plugs then, maybe blow torch a socket to drop over the plugs and melt through the plastic.

The plastic end of the HT leads has melted due to the overheating and I can't get to the nut on the spark plugs to get them out. The leads just snapped off when I tried to get them out, I think the other half ran the car for quite a while with no coolant.

I made my own cam locking tools today. I got a M16 bolt and a M10 bolt. Drilled into the M16 bolt about 2 cm with a 9.5mm drill. I then pushed the M10 into the hole I had made using a vice. I then cut the head off the M10 bolt off so only 14mm of the M10 threaded shaft was left. It works great and cost pence. I will post pictures once they are out of the cams. Now I'm just struggling to release the power steering pump
