hi
i have a 04 punto sporting and it has developed a loud grating noise when braking on the ice or snow . the pedal junps up and down and it sounds like it is ripping the front brakes to pieces - its like cogs are stripping . the pads and discs are like new . as soon as i get on a road with no snow it is fine.
the noise can be heard by poeple walking as you pass them so it is quite loud
thanks

Pedal jumps up & down cause the ABS is controlling the braking to prevent wheels locking up.Wish I had ABS:(
the jump on the pedal nearly throws you out of your seat and the noise is very loud . it is not the normal pedal jump you get with abs

Fiat is known to have had problems with wheel bearings that are partially siezed which causes the ABS to behave violently at low speed.

Happened to ours!

That's what is supposed to happen (y)

The ABS forces the pad off the disc until traction is regained (i.e. the wheels stops skidding), and then re-applies the pad; it does this tens (if not hundreds) of times a second and that is the 'pumping' and grating noise you hear. It is noisy, it does sound unnatural and it can be alarming ;)

If your car is doing it on ice and snow then the system is working as it ought too. Read the manual, it describes the sensation in there.

I really wish people would try their ABS before needing it in anger as it can be an odd feeling and in a panic people have been known to take their foot off the brake (the very worst thing you could do) thinking something had gone wrong. I would always reccomend getting up to a good 50mph on a straight road and, making sure there is nowt behind you and that conditions are good (i.e. no water, snow or ice on the road) bury the brake-pedal into the footwell. Once it's been experienced, it will be less of a surprise next time.
