Hi all

I've had my car down for more then 7 months now and I'm going crazy :bang:

I've been told by my mechanic that when i disconnected the ignition box, those two plugs (20 or 29 pin) that was in it, it will not work again thus I would need to buy a new one sealed. Is this true or he's making things up?

My initial problem with the car was while I was driving, i stopped at a sign and then when I accelarated, it was like it's going at half the speed with the accelaretion reuced dramatically! and the EM light turned on flashed off and then steady on

Could this be an ECU problem or anything? pls help

Car bought 2001 september - Punto Mk2 1.2 8V

Thanks in advance

thats bull.

Welcome to the forum :)
sounds like you had a coil pack go.
what is EM light?

Hi sorry for the late reply

the EM light is the Engine Management or at least that's what I think

What about the ecu problem any help?

The coils where tried on new ones and still the problem remained

If the engine is running on two cylinders then its almost certain to be ecu faulty.

If the ecu is disconnected whilst the engine is running, or if the earth is faulty, or if the ecu is disconnected within a minute of the ignition being switched off (delatch period), this can cause massive voltage spikes in the ecu and cause internal failures.

If the fault occurred before the ecu was unplugged then the fault was not due to the unplugging. Unfortunately there are a hell of a lot of people who think they know a bit about things, here whispers, get advice from parts departments, etc and suddenly a fact is born. :bang:

Thanks for the help, was there a recall on the ECU??

I bought mine Sept 2001 1.2 8V - Must have been a july or august make. How can i check??

Was a recall (coil drivers) but.............alot were already knackered by that time, even known them to go while customer bringing in for recall
Either way out of warranty now (sept 2001)......Dave I think knows where to get cheaper ECU's,search through forums sure I read it somewhere?
