Horn stopped working - fuse?

Yesterday I was driving home as usual, when the car in front braked to a stop opposite a right turn into a car park. No signals, but then someone got out. I was giving them a quick "why don't you tell me what you're doing!" beep on the horn, except it went more like 'b'. Further attempts at sounding it gave no sound. Most annoying since later in the journey I needed it, and again this morning! Now that I rely on the horn in my Punto (on my previous Astra I never got the horn to sound - lack of need and hard to operate!), I want to fix it.

Has anyone had this porblem before or have I just used the horn too much and it's knackered? If it were to need replacing where could I get a truck like prrraafff one? Oh, and is the horn part of the MOT?

The horn is part of the MOT.
You can buy airhorn kits from most car shops and Halfords.
Could be a loose wire, blown fuse or a knackered horn. Its quite easy to check with a multimeter.

Cheers, I checked it with a meter and found that it is the horn unit and the rest of the system seems fine. I'm about to go down to halfords and check out thier range.

Halfords do a 2 tone one (red with chrome bits - how odd - you're not gonna see it anyway) for about 20 I believe. I got my 2 tone setup from a scrapper, 2 a horn :D

oooooohh yes. I am a tight arse:)

Pickuped the single tone Halford jobbie. Same make as the original one (Flamm), also made in Italy, slightly different design and it fitted easily. Works fine, and surprisingly now I have it haven't need to use it!

is power actually getting to the horn itself? get a multimeter on it. Mk2 horns are known to fail due to water ingress.
oh and the clicking relay... its should click as you press the horn and again when you release it, is this happening?

Re: Horn stopped working - fuse?

measures voltages or currents
link may be a high or a low price
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=25414

basically select 50 volts and get a mate to hold it across horn terminals while you push down if it moves there is voltage going to it and if it moves switich is working

or is voltage a serial connection
or select amps about 150 if it has it to be on safe side (if car batteries push that much)
and if it moves switich is working

The relay click would be very quiet anyway. The horn is located under the bonnet, right up at the front near the drivers side headlamp on a bracket. Theres a push on connector for it... pull it off. Set your meter to DC Voltage (sometimes indicated with a V and a horizontal line with 3 dots underneath it.) There will usually be several DC voltage settings, so pick one that is greater than 12v. If your unsure, the assistant at the shop will be able to tell you where to set the meter to test for 12 volts DC. Stick one needle in one terminal in the connector and the other in the other. Then have a friend press the horn whilst you check for a reading. If the display stays at zero, theres a problem with the circuit. If it reads 12 or so, your horns had it (which usually is the problem.) Just replace the horn. simple bolt off, bolt on job

Yeh, you measure the voltage directly off the terminals.
Were not really concerned with the current, just making sure were actually getting something at the horn contacts.
and yup, car batteries will push 150amps no problem Even the smaller batteries like the 002/202 used in a punto will push out 350+ easily. Most meters only measure to 10amps anyway.
