Hi Everybody
I am new to this forum, and this is my first post,I am hoping some one can help me, I have a 2010 1.4 punto Evo, and the air conditioning compressor is stuck on, and I was wondering if I can simply remove the drive belt, and replace it for the non aircon, standard shorter version, as I very rarely use A/C, and at the moment could do without the expense of a new compressor, any ideas would be greatly appreciated
cheers ernie

Hi,
The pulley on the compressor turns all the time. The pulley contains an electric clutch that when activated drives the compressor.

How do you know the compressor is stuck on?

You could try unplugging the electrical connector on/near the compressor that operates the clutch.

Thank you for the very quick reply, the whole lot of the compressor turns all the time, but comparing it with other cars, the driven pulley spins free, and the outer section spins free until the air con is switched on, mine drives the compressor all the time, all fuses have been checked, and operate as they should
cheers Ernie

So even when the car is turned off and the keys removed the compressor won’t turn separately to the engine, easy to check you can usually turn the middle section of the compressor pulley by hand or with a spanner or bar on the nuts with the engine off, while the pulley wheel stays still.

If it’s constantly engaged all the time then I’d take the compressor clutch off to see why, obviously the compressor is working and not seized and so I assume the aircon is working ? What ever the case it doesn’t sound like you need a new compressor but maybe something in the compressor clutch either needs cleaning or replacing

Hi, and thanks for the reply, the fault is exactly as you described, although the air con hardly works at all, but this could just be a recharge, weather permitting I will take the clutch apart this weekend, and have a look
cheers ernie

If the compressor is running constantly the system could easily be getting over pressurised and that can't be good for the system long term
