Hi,

I am a newbie and hoping someone can help.

My Twin air 2012 is having problems cold starting, she fires up straight away and then dies unless you really rev her up and then sometimes dies anyway.

The Stop/start also doesn't work.

The engine management light comes on until she warms up, but goes off if you take the key out and try to restart.

She goes like e Boeing when she's warm.

Garage say she has very low compression when cold.

She needs a service as i think she has been poorly maintained.

Does she need a new engine or is it some filter or oil pressure problem?

Hi - a modern 500 question.. :)

Ok the important question..

This lack of servicing..

Does that mean dirty oil?

These engines use special tech. Where the oil plays its part in operating the valves and therefore fuelling

The twinair unit itself can cause low compression ;)

Please tell us more :)

Thank you so much for replying, we have changed the oil, filter and sparks but still have the same problem. Any ideas?:bang::bang:

Could be poor compression, but i don't understand why she goes so well when she's warm, we def used the right oil

Selenia oil is correct..
but the potential damage from a time of neglect

On the 4 cylinder 'multiair' motors

'Misfire'- low compression is usually diagnosed as 'multiair failure'

A new multiair unit fixes it..

As it can then operate the valves as designed

Eml light on but no fault codes that is very strange.

My twinair 500 from 2012 had exactly the same sympthoms, exept it had codes. ”Misfire cylinder 2”.
It is in the workshop now and have been since Dec 21.
It took them more than one month to diagnoze????? (The workshop had never seen this kind of failure tho). Well it seems to be the multiair module, waiting for a new one atm from italy. Hopefully Ill get the car end of next week! Hope and pray... hope you dont have same prob, its not a fun cost..:(

jackwhoo.
you found out what was wrong with your vehicle. I have the same problem

I have already checked this procedure. Compression leaks on the 2nd cylinder (4bar) but not always. I suspect it could be a problem with the multiair unit. Has anyone changed it yet?

Fiat main dealer ran a flushing oil through my TA on one occasion. I would investigate this as a possibility and also check that the Uniair module filter is clean. There is a thread on here describing how to do this. It is not a major job. Also google Mark Stammers.

google Mark Stammers
That was my first thought too.

What is being described fits with what some have found to be an excessively worn uniair module. Mark Stammers is an automotive diagnostic consultant who has developed a way of testing for this; you can read about it here.

The good news is that if your car tests similarly, then the same repair should provide a lasting fix.

The bad news is that there are very few mechanics capable of carrying out this kind of test. And if the uniair module is faulty, replacements are not cheap. It's not something you want to be changing unless you're sure it's faulty.

This old thread is worth a read; it was written before I'd seen Mark Stammers work. And the prices in it are well out of date!
