Panda (Classic) John Dragon Man's 4x4 Sisley

Introduction

Hello!

Well, I have been waiting a long time to do this!

Introducing (Drum roll please!).....

Edit: about half way through the time it took me to get the car on the road it found the name Talon. So everyone Meet:
Talon. My Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley:

Great Looking car.. As i am sure you all agree!

It has its Good points:

No Horrid noises in any gear and the 4x4 system works and sounds brilliant! Its a Sisley! And it came with some nice extras such as the light grill covers.

and also nice low mileage.

And it has its bad points... Lots of bad points:

Mid body rust, This is the worst on the drivers side (in the UK) front wing:
attachment.php

The Doors are Rusty.. Ok, i did expect this as it seems to be a common thing on most Fiats over 10-15 years old:
attachment.php

And the other Door, Not as bad.. I may be able to save this side!
attachment.php

"Phantom Electronics" the electronics do what they want to do, when they want to do it. No Switches necessary!

Also the Fuse box now lives here :( That means that a flap has been cut in the pocket :(
attachment.php

The Exhaust is very broken, in multiple parts. even the down pipe!
attachment.php

Lastly and by far the worst, Under body rust. Now its not as bad as it could be. The rear sills on both sides have a small 1 - 2 inch hole in them. No biggy.
I have still yet to remove all the plastic wheel arch liners and have a proper look.
Here's a picture from the front drivers side wheel arch, its only a skin so a easy repair:
attachment.php

A bit of work needs doing to the brakes, pads i think. The fluid needs changing and the drivers side front brake pipe is corroded so i will replace that.

Also the engine needs a good cleaning up, a full on service replacing the water pump, cam belt, tensioner pulley, distributor cap and rotor arm, filters, oil, radiator, coolant and starter motor.

I also need a few things like a locking filler cap, the little clips that hold the air box together, a new boot gas strut and a non damaged back bumper.

Its the car I have always wanted right from when I was a young lad. So you can imagine how I was when I won it on eBay for a grand total of £547. Getting it from Wales To my home town of Derby Cost me £135.

With some love, care and late nights I reckon I can turn it into a cracking motor!

Oh and stay tuned as I will be keeping a Video Log of what I will be doing to the car on Youtube!

This is the video i took just as the car transporter left from delivering it:

I am so very proud to be the owner of a Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley!

:D:D:D

Edit: this is how Talon looks now:

:eek::cool::cool::cool::yum:

Since then Talon has gained more lights, and now has some blue rust free Seat Marbella doors. I had also converted him to Fuel injection, however the parts i used were old and worn so now it is back on Carburettor.

This thread has its ups and downs but through the years Talon and myself have pulled through.

When you are done reading this thread, be sure to check out the little red scrap yard rescued Seat Marbella thread and also Project Fallout!

Peace all and enjoy the thread, videos and pictures!
Stop googling it! Don't worry about it over Christmas, people mainly only complain on the internet as opposed to writing about their success. I ordered something from America about 3 weeks ago and it still hasn't come, I googled this and found all manor of issues from parcels being entirely lost by said courier and never being found or money back.
I've decided I'm simply just going to wait and assume because its Christmas they're busy.

Don't obsess over it.

Talon has tax now, so i went out to see a friend the other side of derby.

I cant fault talon, the ride was fantastic and it has wayyyyy more power than the cinq just has a few things that i have got to get use to.

the gearing is kinda strange to me.. no need to take corners in 2nd anymore, got to do them in 3rd!
heh at 60mph the engine does sound a bit like an old prop shaft airplane.

hmm and i am not sure if the bushes on the gearstick rods are a little... spongy. changing gear, the movement into a gear is quite long and you get a positive click when the gear goes in. i dont know if its just me or are all pandas like this? its not an issue, i will get use to it. the left and right movement is fine.

anyone in the oncoming lane was to see me i am sure they would think i was insane with the huge grin i had on my face. the second i pulled of the drive i could not stop smiling.

heh about the tax.. i guess the ball is in there court now. they will get back to me over it or not. only time will tell. i had a cop car follow behind me for a while but he didnt pull me over so i guess i was good.

all in all.. i r a happy panda owner. >_<

Fantastic news you got your panda on the road! It's been a long journey but one you seem to have really enjoyed and approached with an amazingly positive attitude (y)

Re the tax, I didn't declare on of my cars as sorn for a whole year once. Reason was I damaged my left foot and was having trouble driving a manual so I parked it up at my friends dads house (of the road) and my friend lent me an automatic car he had. I never got around to declaring my car as sorn and when I eventually came to tax it they said I could be in for a big fine. I explained what happened and 2 weeks later a letter arrived from the DVLA saying no further action would be taken :D I'm sure you'll be ok(y)

hey all, feel like i should give you all a bit of an update.

Talon is running super fine. not one fault! nothing sounds bad, nothing feels loose, its all good. :D:D

yesterday i went for a trip down to my favorite place.. the scrap yard. i found a few cinq SX's and sadly a cinq Abarth (both rust victims) also a Fiat Uno. (never seen a panda in since last year)
I pulled the central locking motors out the doors and boot of the cinq and a few things from the Uno, mainly engine related. (pipes, temp sensor, ignition stuff etc.)
Also found >This<, a tilt sensor for my alarm in another car so i grabbed that right quick. the whole lot only cost me £10 (6x door/boot motors, a few spare coolant pipes + clips, the tilt sensor, and the ignition system from the Uno) so i was quite happy when i got home and googled the tilt sensor and saw it priced at £59.95! :slayer::D

today i fitted the central locking motors in the doors using some of the cinq connecting rods. i wired them all in fine threading the wire through some black fish tank air hose so it protects the wire between the door and door frame, looks good too. i still have to boot to do.. got to figure out how to do this... Jon, does your 750 have an electronic lock on the boot? i dont know any one else who has central locking on a panda
Also fitted and tested the tilt sensor.. works really well. (just waiting for a car to come in to the scrap yard with the same alarm as mine with all the extras like the microwave sensors and SMS alert >_<)

hehe.. i don't really like to leave the house if i do not have a reason on to be out, but i got to say, i find myself using my car just because i love to drive it. what a car.:worship:

hey guys,

umm.. how do you get the UJ apart on the prop shaft? i have taken the retaining circlips out but i do not want to force anything just yet till i get some advice on how to split them.
my guess is use two sockets and the vice to press them out.

these are the bits i want to get out... >Link<

striping the prop shaft down to clean it up, re-grease and paint it and the mount.

also what grease should i use?

the extending bit at the rear of the propshaft was seized but i managed to free it up. the prop extends quite long so i guess (not that i am going to do it with Talon) you could give the 4x4 a lift and not have to worry about the prop shaft being long enough.

any help would be fantastic :D

ahh thats fantastic news. something ill do tomorrow then.

good news is all the rubber bits on the prop seem in great condition, bad news is that i snapped a few of the original circlips :/
i'll have to find replacements from somewhere.

had a look at the boot lock today to see if i could figure out a way to make it unlock with the central locking.. place to mount the motor and a way to make it somehow pull the lock pin down so it enables the arm on the button to press against the arm on the catch mechanism. i cant see a way i can do it without damaging the small pin at the back of the lock barrel. as the only way to engage the arm is to rotate the lock barrel around, and that can only be done with the key.

i may use a little grumbleweed technology where the boot is concerned.. but still keep the outside button.

Not sure how useful GWs solution might be, I've got a Y10 release mech which is designed for remote release and central locking bolted in place of the original. Might be a touch tricky finding one the same. Cinq one maybe?

yes a cinq one was what i had in mind as i can remember that the y-10 and chinq boot release mechanism looks the same. i just cant remember it well enough to picture it on a panda.

ill have to have a look at it in detail at the next meet. theres got to be some way i can mod the boot to be locked and unlocked electronically yet still be able to use the key if i have to.

rare i know but i wonder if i can find any online parts from a panda europe that has central locking fitted as standard... hmmm.

Who wants to see some prop shaft pictures?
tough.. you are going to anyway. :p :D

dont worry, all the little bits have been cleaned of old grease and are safe!

its a real shame the rubber has perished as the bearings are still really smooth.

going to look good when its done  :slayer::slayer:

yeah, one i have the others i can tell which end goes to the front.

well ive just uploaded another video.. i just show the prop shaft in bits in it.

oh and i also re-packed the 2 drive shaft bearings with grease. they were very close to running dry!
no movement in both of them though and they still roll smooth, it seems a shame to replace them just because of the perished rubber.
i do explain how i plan to fix them without paying £300 for new bearings.

agreed... so is that buying the mould that injects the molten rubber around the bearing?.. or just the bearing.. lmao.

talk about ebay crack smokers.

oh and ill soon have my roof rack back on talon! just got some metal tubing cut for it

for those who want to know, the roof bar dimensions for the Sisley and 4x4 roof rack are:
10mm x 20mm x 975mm

going well glad to se yet another fiat saved and put to good use as for the bearing plan your idea is good perfectly suitable but you will need to either use the stock holes or ones not to far of that location because the height you were talking about is just to high as all you will be ding is distorting the bracket and hardily holding the carrier down securely plus it will only hold top and bottom not so much the sides so lower hole location and or bend some sheet steel in a u shape and bolt it down the more permanent option or buy a pillow block and use rubber dampers to bolt it in yet again more permanent plus if one component fails you can buy them easily
