New Brava Model Training and Testing

PSA's current diesel engines......... they provide the aural pleasure of a Transit van.
This made me laugh, because apparently all the new small diesel engines going into peugoets and citroens are dagenham diesels!

Why do people talk about small power bands? Who cares? In a computing sense it's like comparing a Pentium-M against a Pentium 4. One might be 1.7 ghz and the other a 3.2 ghz respectively but the P-M still gets as much done in fewer clock cycles. I suppose if you drive by the rev counter it might make a difference but personally I am happy to change up when I reach the end of the power band. It's about what gets done per RPM for me, not how many RPM I can take my engine up to yet going nowhere.

a wider powerband means it is far easier to be "at the right rpm" when you need to be. that translates into a car that is far easier to drive quickly. if you have 2 identicle cars and both have 100bhp, the one with a wider flatter power curve will be faster.

thats why peak figures are as much use as a virgin girlfriend. you need to consider your power and torque curves to see how much is avaialable at different rpms. a wide flat curve is ideal, and would be preferable to a tall narrow curve giving a higher peak figure.

imagine you're coming into a long right hand bend, you know that if you want to leave the saxo vts thats up your arse you need to be hitting your peak in 3rd coming out the corner, but then you remember that your peak is only between 4000rpm and 6000rpm, and at your current speed you cant get up to 4000rpm in 3rd by the time you exit the corner.

what do you do? drop it into second and have bumper sex with a saxo? leave it in 3rd and watch as the saxo leaves you for dead? or buy a car that can pull from 3000rpm to 6500rpm with a similar amount of vigour?

Mine pulls from 1750 upto 4500 in 5th quite well. Of course 4500 in 5th is silly speeds so you would more likely be in 4th which is good for 30-90. It's all about having the right style of driving. Look at Le Mans - diesels showing the petrols how it's done just in speed nevermind the savings on fuel and therefore pit duration.

As for my appreciation of a Fiat twinkie.. I have a Tipo 2.0 16v. :)

I don't tend to race so why I would be worrying about a Saxo and trying to beat it...;)

The different gear ratios mean that I am just as likely to hit the powerband in a diesel than I am in a petrol...just that I don't need to go through as many RPM in the diesel as I do in the petrol to gain speed.

I wonder if petrol drivers would be happy with a diesel if they doubled the actual RPM on the counter?

for normal driving a diesel is probably best, for B road racing it isnt. guess it depends what your priorities are.

many people who dont understand cars keep away from diesels because they still believe the outdated myths that diesels are rough, noisey and slow. it will take a long time for these ideas to die. these days they certainly aren't any of those things, and with the fuel prices we have they're an increasingly attractive choice.

The suspension setup is carried over from the Stilo apparently.

Heavily modified & braced, stilos (in my opinion) 'flounder' around corners but new bravo feels so much more rigid......mini roundabouts are great fun:D

apparently they lack torque and need to be driven hard. the reviews dont make them sound very promising.

I dont think so,drive one.

oh cant wait for the my new bravo spring just snapped threads:(

Wont happen Dave,new springs (y)

Would be nice if they did a three door!

Should be in around 18months.

So what niggles did you guys find? :p

None....& dont think we didn't look, had a good 'prod' at all the fittings etc & the cars all drove perfect(y)

None, we had several competitors cars to compare the cars to and to be perfectly honest the bravo blitzed them all, we were very impressed.

I couldnt believe how bad the astra was...infact I took it out for another drive it was awful(n) The focus & honda also came out badly the only decent one was the megane but the interior was poor & looks bit strange at the back.

So if I drive below 25mph weaving left/right I'll be flashing my fog lights?

No,it depends on the steering angle.....you'd be arrested & breathalised anyway :p

This is all sounding very promising.

Any idea of the launch date?

July 1st I think....seriously grab a test drive on dealer launch.

Tjet engines are superb, like T says drive one, I am seriously thinking of changing the stilo jtd for a 150 tjet Bravo, just had our one delivered to us, its a basic version but everyone in the dealership is really impressed, the Alfa guys loved it! They tried hard to find fault, but had to give up, only thing they could find was it didnt have alloys! I will post some stuff as soon as dave or stu can help me upload it.

That sounds promising, but only time will tell whether there will be Tape A messages, water in bootlid, flashing mileage, bubbly paint etc etc..

All hard to tell from a test drive I know :p
