The early years were very tough on the family though. I didn't really see my children when they were babies and toddlers and, now being a granddad and spending lots of time with my grandchildren I see how much I missed. I do regret that and I can never get it back but luckily my kids, now with their own families, seem to understand and appreciate the start in life we were able to give them.

This problem is not going away in our generation / the future generations. Sadly, that child who possibly saw more of the mother than father will now be seeing more of a nanny...

The biggest lie they're peddling to young women especially now is to put their careers ahead of their family aspirations. Big mistake. It's going to lead to a lot of lost chances to start a family and a lot of resentful people. And in other cases, children who miss both parents as they're out working.

In my opinion, they should be trying to convince more young men to prioritise their family in their lives over career, not trying to totally brainwash all young people into the lie that a career is what you'll feel happy with looking back at your life.

Far left agendas ... coming for us all in one form or another. It's sad.

Everything you dislike is not the doing of the far left..

In this case it's the absolute failure of successive Conservative governments to do anything about the lack of supply in the housing market. They have only had 11 years to sort it at this point. But they won't because their big donors make money out of high property prices. Basic capitalism is not a far left ideology.

As a result both parents must work, as a house that's big enough to actually have children requires both parents to work unless either of you is in a job significantly above average wage or you live in an absolute hell hole.

When looking for reasons as to why things are bad...always remember those who are actually in power have the control and the far left have never been in power so are unlikely to have caused you any actual problems.

I'm not talking about the housing issue, that post is more aimed at the radical feminists telling young women that they need to strive to be CEOs and put their careers first and before the desire to have a family.

I wouldn't blame specific political parties (especially not in the UK yet) for it. But it's a societal issue and it follows the 'wokeism' which is very much a far left issue.

Also, I'm not saying that one parent being unemployed is the solution, both must have a job really these days. But a lot of women opt for jobs that suit being able to pick their young children up from school, free on the weekends etc. whereas men will tend to work overtime, do dangerous jobs and work far from home etc.

My post was trying to point out that rather than telling women they must do the same (leaving nobody there for the children other than a carer) we should be telling men to get their priorities right and choose a good career, yes, but not spend so much time away from their family.

The reason, because it directly relates to what another member posted reflecting on his career / family experience and literally saying he can see now why he wishes he spent more time with his kids. My point was, sadly the younger generations are being lied to and being told that careers are more important when they're not (n)

But I would add, on the direction you were taking it, that equally, the conservatives aren't to blame for every issue we face either :p (and capitalism is still the best system humanity has ever come up with! Despite it's very real flaws :D)

The “far left” is a creation of the far right extremists, I’ve never actually met anyone who is “far left” but it suits the narrative of people with far right views to make mad claims about what the “far left” will take from you if you don’t follow us.

Most people would like a decent well funded health care system, just to see a doctor in the US will cost you a couple of hundred dollars so we are very lucky here to have the NHS, but having any sort of publicly funded health care system in the US is often touted to be a far left ideal that will bankrupt the country, or some really horrible rich people who say “why should I have to pay for the sick and needy, I don’t wana pay taxes just so some people can have antibiotics, I need all of my billions of dollars”

There are plenty of other situations like that, but remember the “far left” is very much a creation of people who don’t want to see anything from anyone’s else’s point of view, and don’t see any benefit in anything that doesn’t immediately benefit them.

Yes you can buy very cheap property in Northern Ireland..... but you’d have to live in northern island which as you say SB1500 isn’t exactly a mecca for high salaries. also most people don’t really want land, just somewhere for kids to play they’re not looking to start a farm

Unfortunately, you're outright wrong here Andy. No debate. The 'far' right and left are very real. It's when you take your typical and valid 'right' conservative or 'left' liberal views, but you mutate it and leave rationality behind. Anybody on both sides can take things 'too far' and it's when things are taken too far with no tolerance, there is a problem. To pretend that there is only a far right, but not a far left to use your own term is: delusional.

You perfectly summed up how the far right see it with "narrative of people with far right views to make mad claims about what the “far left” will take from you if you don’t follow us" , but this applies exactly in the opposite direction too.

And I love the NHS and benefit from it as much as the next UK citizen. But it's definitely not the best health care system in the world (unfortunately) and it's very much impossible to give it the funding it deserves to work flawlessly in the same way that there will never be enough money to perfectly fund education, or military, or roads to each work flawlessly. When something is government funded by the tax payer, it's going to be a limited pot and fiercely competitive to decide who gets what money. And don't pretend a Labour government would have any magic answers the Conservatives don't, because regardless of your value, you can't stretch a limited pot to do everything.

Well my wife is extremely independent in general, knows her own mind quite happy to tell me do one if necessary. We very much share parental responsibilities etc bring in around the same amount of money as well.

Is that because we're both crazy lefties? No, we have bills to pay simple as that, that is the world as it stands.

I would suggest that is the reality of the majority and "wokeism" only exists in an attempt to demonise being a reasonable human. Can't say anything these days..and yet people still manage it, usually while complaining they are being silenced with an absolute lack of self awareness.

Also while you can't blame the conservatives for everything...you can at least see that in the last 50 years we have a Conservative government for all of that time except for 18 years. So they've had a hand in a lot of things...

I disagree, although they may not be "in government" left wing post modernist ideology emanates throughout the civil service, ministry of defence, courts universities and media.

As far as I see it, things started getting bad around the Year 2000 with Blair and "new Labour". The reason things aren't getting better under the conservatives is they're literally a carbon copy of what "new Labour" was about then, they are Conservative ONLY in name. It's simply an organisation for attaining office for the sons of gentleman.

They remain in power simply because their opposition in the form of Labour is an even bigger farce.

On a side note, I've never felt as disenfranchised and under-represented than I do now.

Can't argue with any of that.

Thankfully one thing the government is very good at, especially in the past year, is playing down all of the attempts to inject the toxic form of wokeism, which aims to demonise decent people as you say, has been defended against quite well.

I know the US is an entirely different kettle of fish, but I'm proud to say that every school, business and company I've worked for to date in the few parts of the country I've spent time in have all had the utmost respect for everybody around me and I've never personally met anyone stupid enough to legitimately be sexist or racist toward anyone, nor anybody who wouldn't speak up if they saw someone being bullied. All I ever hear about are stringent laws for ensuring respect and fairness for people and I'm proud to conclude that actually, we can say that the UK does not have any major problem in those ways.

I think we're a society of mostly decent people to be honest, on both sides of the political divide. Again, it's just the minority of extremists on both sides who try to tear apart the society we're all actively part of, contributing toward and always trying to improve and fix where we can.

I suppose in that 50 year time span though, the various forms and flavours of the Conservative government must have been pretty much consistently winning through the democratic process.

And I know there are some big problems we've all come through in that time. But at the same time, stuff like the recession, stuff like Covid, that's not exactly all on the UK, these were global problems.

The UK has pretty much remained one of the most significant players in the world in various ways during the past 50 years of massive changes, to this day. And I think we're on the verge of seeing that again now following the B-word.

There's a lot to keep trying to improve, sure. But there's also a lot to be proud of!

No, our country is on a downward spiral of slow death which from what I can tell started around 1956 with the Suez Canal debacle. USA threatening to sell all their sterling bonds if we didn't retreat.

That was the first true sign that the UK is no longer a world "super power". We've gone from having zero debt and being a net "creditor", world class industry and innovation to owing everyone money. It's a matter of time until the Dollar overtakes the £ in my opinion.

I'd love to know where this "Special Relationship" rubbish comes from, we've simply been shat on by them since World War 2.

If anything it's getting worse as we have neither capitalism nor socialism. We have a system where when capitalism fails socialism steps in, makes sure the rich people are OK and then the poor are told to suck it up.

Literally the worst of both worlds.

However I still refuse to blame the powerless..be they the "left", refugees, ethnic minorities ,women or anyone else for a situation they did not create. To do so is to let those who have actually wronged you off. There's nothing wrong with a wanting a fair swing at things.

You'll never get one...but that's beside the point.

I think we had a good thing going with Trump, but if listening to the sickening 'Irish nationalist' voices since Biden's victory they seem to think he's going to somehow bully Britain into doing what Ireland wants... I can't see it though, thank god lol

I agree, However I believe what we have would "work" if we didn't have open borders. You can't have a healthcare and benefit system that's "free at the point of entry" and have open borders. It's either one or the other. Open borders can and only will work if everyone is playing from the same rule book...

I think the little bit of socialism we have, good example being the NHS, is literally one of the biggest non-working, or at least non-working how it should be parts of our country.

Capitalism is why you and me can own our houses and our cars and start businesses that take us up in the world, or spend our lives choosing which field we'd like to specialise in and work for a company producing innovations (cars, medicine, computers) that change the world, and that then trickle down to be within reach of people with lower incomes etc.

Socialism and its problems speak for itself. I would recommend anyone who wants proof to go spend a few years in Cuba or other socialist country for a few years and then coming back so I can read their report on why they love Capitalism.

You know, it's all good in theory. So is communism. We already should know enough as humanity to realise that it's not the way forward. It's even richer coming from people like us in the UK, who actively reap the rewards of Capitalism on the daily. I wouldn't change it anyway

100% to this.

We have a massive issue in Northern Ireland with this.

Sure, the open border seems friendly in theory. And it keeps the irate-explosion'y angry types amongst us from having tantrums.

But in reality, it's a massive fraud opportunity. The number of people I could name personally working in the North / South claiming benefits and fiddling taxes between the two is insane. Same with the healthcare and education... it's a joke in practical sense.

We also had an incident last week where police officers were inspecting a possible drug den in an industrial estate. Somebody in a lorry rammed their Skoda tourer absolutely destroying it and injuring the three officers inside... what happened next? The lorry disappeared over across the border into Ireland... Now our police service is at the mercy of theirs to find it.

There should absolutely be a border here, not to oppress anybody like you'll hear when it comes up, but because these are functionally different countries and are being exploited to facilitate crime and fraud. And if that means I need to quickly show my license to cross it and sometimes let them open my boot... what the hell is wrong with that?

I wonder what London back in the 1600s would do with the people of today on these issues ... as I walk past their now ornamental preserved 'roaring meg' canons and their still standing cathedral which looks so much like a fortress it's uncanny....

See there is an argument that the NHS would work a lot better if the capitalists hadn't been allowed to buy all the bits that might be profitable. Especially when the only part of the Covid pandemic that hasn't been a shambles has been the part that wasn't sold out to private companies I.e. the vaccine roll out.

But anyway I'm going to stop soap boxing..

Can't argue with any of that.

I can:
1974 - 1979
1997 - 2010
That's 18 years of Labour, not 8.
(Probably a typo in Steven's post, but had to be corrected).

Me too Chris. I've reached such a depth of despair with it all that I've given serious thought to voting for "our" Nicola and her wish for independence although I think I know, deep down in my heart, that disaster would ensue?

Starting to think this should be in the grumpy thread. Sorry if I'm being a bit of a buzzkill I made the mistake of spending my Sunday afternoon researching our history post world war 2 which admittedly didn't know much about previously and it's seriously black pilled me :bang:

Indeed I've also decided to give it rest.

Also thanks for spotting my test other Chris, gold star.
