So I bought a 56 plate 1.9 diesel 3dr mjt emotion/dynamic. Now problem is the more I look at this car the more it just don't add up. For instance all the punters I have had (all 2007) have had drums, but this has got calipers at the back.

Now the problem is I got a ticking sound from the left back wheel. And a grinding sound from the right back wheel when the car is moving. I think it's compounded by the fact that previous owner put 17's on this car.

Any info as to where to start would help. PS I'm a nice to vehicle mechanics

Welcome to the forum :)

I stand to be corrected, but I think every 1.9 had rear discs. As to the ticking and grinding noises, check the obvious things - any stones in the calipers, discs or pads? Are the rear bearings shot?

I have not come across 1.9 grande's with disks. I have checked the pads. Only conclusion I have for the right side is a pad collapsing or not retracting enough. As for the left I check the bearings as well as the housing but found no signs of damage. ?

PS thank you for the welcome. Hope to be posting loads cause I want to really fix up this car.

Go for a short drive then pull up and out your hand near each disk see if any are a lot hotter the the others indicating a dragging brake

Thanks, I will check via that method. I did so earlier but mistake I made was compare the back brakes against each other.

Jack up one wheel at a time and check for brake noise, bearing play etc.

It's not unusual for rear calipers getting stuck.

Keep in mind rear wheels may not spin as free as the front ones. This is normal.

I want to thank all of you guys that responded. I followed both opinions. The update is thus far. Right side rear wheel. Metal against metal sound when spinning the back wheel jacked up. Left wheel I can't tell as yet but it's not the brakes

Update
The car now won't enter into gear. Engine starts revs up but no gear entry. I had just bought new calipers to put on. I'm stumped

Probably best to start a new thread for the new problem.

New callipers seems a bit overkill, Usually you'd start with some new pads and discs which are very cheap on these cars, and while changing them inspect everything carefully to make sure nothing is catching or bent into the moving parts.

These are not complicated sets ups, It should be fairly obvious if something is untoward.
