Hey gus.

I have a GP sporting tjet 1.4 2009.

I have noticed a clunking in the front of my car and belive it to be my strut mounts. (See pics)

(Look at picture whilst reading this):When I push down on the front side of the car I notice that where the rubber meets the red metal chassis of the car a gap appear while pushing up and down.

I want to know is it this top.part with the rusty top I need changing or is the under strut mount I need replacing (the part the rest under the wheel arch)

IF someone could tell me the names.of these parts as.im.not sure if I'm just guessing names here. Top strut mount? Under side strut mount?

Hi Emmerson,

have a look @ ePER and you'll probably find what you're looking for, like part name, part number, how it's assembled etc.
Seems you have to replace items 1 and 4 but that 2B confirmed by checking...

Just done mine, part number four is the bump stop, you can probably re use.

Honestly, unless the struts have been changed recently I'd get springs, shocks and top mounts. You should be able to salvage the boot, bump stop and top plate from old unit but you'd need to dismantle old unit.

I changed my shocks and springs recently and the replacement springs I fitted did not need compressors to fit. there is a good guide on here, get a cheap impact gun, it will save you hours. If doing at home for first time allow about 2 hours per side.

Have you checked drop links? These can sound awful if they are well gone. I'd change these anyway if doing top mounts unless they are brand new, cheap to buy and you'll have to remove for top mounts.

Cheers

Ben

Hi Emmerson,

we're slowly getting lost with your different posts about the same issue ...

ePER is available in the blue ribbon at the top of this Forum, select Fiat, Punto, 199 and you'll be discovering a lot of treasures..

I agree totally , it's much more likely to be anti roll bar drop links or anti roll bar bushes than to mounts.

Easier and cheaper to check and change drop links that to mounts.

The movement the original poster mentions at very top of strut above the inner wing sounds normal to me.

Hey jack.

I will have a proper look over weekend but when I check a while back I could not see these as damaged. But noticed the rusty strut mount tops

Hey berne yes apologies for this. I had a.look at that website I type EPER on Google and it is great but doesn't seem to cover grande punto just the old style puntos

Hey Ben u was considering to change out whole assembly also but since my xar had such low mileage I was tossing back and forth. My plan was to remove the assembly but taken it to a.local garage to compress springs off for me and them re compress.them back on for me. I was told £237 from my local fiat / stone acre (they seem to be called now) in Willenhall for just to change strut mounts. So in away was using this as a budget but want it even cheaper if can. How did you manage to take springs off without compressing the spring, as this is what worries me about job as I hear dangerous it can be and never down it before.

I bought new shocks, springs, bump stops and boots and built up. I fitted sport springs which are shorter hence no need to compress. Old units went in the bin, had I wanted to strip them, then yes, they would have needed compressing.
Low mileage or not, the age of components also makes s difference, mines a 59 plate with 60000 on the clock. NSF spring broke, car felt a bit lardy do just replaced the lot rather than just one spring.
Changed wishbones too despite no MOT issues, bushes were soft although still obviously passable.

Maybe I'm just a bit OCD.

Cheers

Lol tbf that is something I would love to do. Just change all components. But only learnt about cars for past year and abit now. So I worry sometimes, but I guess you only learn buy doing. I just wish I had more mates who were into cars but all mine are NOT. Can I ask where you got your shock assembly from?

ePER in this Fiatforum covers the 2Y199 model for Puntos, which is the non-evo Grande...

To Check drop links with a ball joint at each end you have to disconnect one end so there is no load on either joint. Then check beach joint there should be no free play or floppiness.

I bought shocks, springs, top mounts, bump stops, boots (all eBay) & bolts (fiat) and built them up. For jobs like this, Haynes manual is worth having. It's not difficult providing you take your time, clean up as much thread on bolts as can be seen with wire brush and spray anything you need to remove with wd40 several times before dismantling.
You are removing something held on with bolts and putting the same new bit back on, it is really not difficult if you have the right tools. The right tools are key, don't try without them.

Impact gun, torque wrench, 3/8" or 1\2" socket set with SIX POINT sockets and a 2' breaker bar.

Cheers

Hey Ben what voltage impact gun to you think will be needed to compress down the springs?

I bought a 240v from eBay, works fine. You'll probably need it along with 18mm deep impact socket to remove the top strut nut as the Allen socket rusts out and rounds off.

Cheers

Hey Ben.

Saw your post from awhile back and I'm having this very issue. Trying to remove the final top nut from strut. Initially it was working but then the nut just kept spinning towards the top. So when I use my impact electric gun the whole strut wants to spin and even if I lock it in with the knuckle to carrier bolt the inner shock pole just spins. I cannot seem to do it the usual way with a socket and Allen key as like u said it's very rusty and feels like it is rounding. Do u have any ideas on how I can get it off? 20181022_171457.jpeg20181022_170656.jpeg
