Re: Power steering failure - currently broken down

Just ordered a new cable from Italy. Couldn't find a Vectra one anywhere so taken the plunge and hope it arrives ok.

Think I will go down the same route as Brian and leave the original in place and cable tie the new onto the loom, I can't see a problem with this.

While I wait I will see if I can get to the bottom of the lack of power as per another thread. It just never ends.................

Re: Power steering failure - currently broken down

Hi Brian

It was a thread I started back in September headed 'Power Loss'.

Still waiting for my cable to arrive.

The steering went big time when my wife was using it. Amazingly she managed to drive it home through Birmingham.

When I looked at it the following morning the steering light was still on so I got a stick about a metre long and gently pressed down on the power socket to the steering pump. Hey presto it works. Also the steering feels pretty good and responsive. So it would appear that the plug must work itself loose with all the pot holes/speedbumps etc we have to put up with; however I can't help feeling that these plugs should lock themselves pretty tightly once they snap into position. Could be mine is already broken. Will check when I fit the new one.

I now carry the stick together with a torch in the boot.

Hopefully when I get the new lead and fit it, the problem should be resolved.

Re: Power steering failure - currently broken down

My new lead arrived from Italy (took 2 weeks). Got my local garage to fit it whilst they had it to sort out a power loss problem, and so far so good. Been driving around for a couple of days now and the steering feels ok.

I think it will take a while though before I stop driving around with the expectation that the power steering will suddenly cut off .

I will post on progress after a few weeks. Hopefully it has cured the problem.

Re: Power steering failure - currently broken down

Hi Daveof49,
I am glad the change of the lead has worked out for you, which gives me some optimism with regard to the problem I am facing with my Croma (2007).

My steering wheel has become stiff in a couple of occasions and each time it has turned back to normal after driving for a minute or two. Do you think, in my case, the problem could be the same?

Re: Power steering failure - currently broken down

Thats exactly how mine started. It would go really stiff and then suddenly come back. The cable seems to have worked and it hasn't reoccurred since it was fitted.

It is worth buying a cable before taking it to a garage as they will probably quote you anything from 700- 900 + to change the whole steering pump . The cable cost me 50 euros from Italy but you may get a Vectra one cheaper.

Re: Power steering failure - currently broken down

Hi Kam05
The power steering draws a huge amount of current and the connector is not very good.

One check is that if you unplug the connector there might be marks around the pin or socket.

The vectra cable I got second hand from a car breaker was far superior and even had a rubber cover built in to protect the connection.

The other cheap thing to check is your battery. As the pump draws so much current a few people have found that the power steering going hard at slow speeds and full lock is the first sign that their battery is on the way out.

Let us know how you get on or if you need any more advice.

Re: Power steering failure - currently broken down

Thanks for your response. So you think Vectra one might have been better than the original cable?

Re: Power steering failure - currently broken down

Thanks for the advice. Indeed, the current battery was bought by the previous owner like 6-7 years ago, but it still works fine as there are no problems when starting the car nor the battery light is on. Nonetheless, you think I should get it tested?

Worth getting the battery checked but it does sound like the steering issue is the connector. A used Vectra C one is better. Seems Vauxall knew a couple of things like this connector and the "tulip" CV joints that they didn't tell Fiat about.

No, that is the fuel filter.
The power steering pump is much lower down, behind the middle of the engine. The plug goes in vertically to the base ot the pump.

It's the cable with thick ~4-5mm diameter wire.

I am a little confused because I was thinking that we are discussing this cable. But, I see no such cable on the photo you attached.
