Can anybody help me please?? Last week i bought a Cinq sporting 95 N with 50k miles on, The car ran superb then a friend of mine offered to change the cam belt as a favour as i've been helping him out alot recently. Wen i got the car back, it was coughing and spluttering, and cutting out. We realised the pipe from the injection to the air intake on the air filter had broken off, so we glued it back on and the car runs much better. The only problem is now it keeps cutting out wen approaching junctions, traffic lights, roundabouts etc, Some times it will fire up straight away and others takes 3 or 4 attempts, it only cuts out at low speeds. The only other thing he did was to change the wiring on my windscreen washers(Swoppped back to front switches as he recons the washer stalk on the steering has had it. He's had it back several times but cannot stop it cutting out. Has any body got any ideas, please try and keep it simple as i am not very technical with cars, this is my first car(take my test on wednesday)

Possible that the HT (spark plug) leads are on wrong coil or the LT (supply voltage for coil) lead may have a bad connection. Maybe worth having a look under the bonnet with a haynes manual.

One thing thats often neglected is the Idle Stepper motor (arrowed) on the throttle body

Remove it and clean the black soot off with a automotive aerosol cleaner. that should hopefully fix it.

If not, invest in a haynes manual and check diagrams to make sure everything is where it should be.

Hope this helps

You sure there is'nt another vacumn leak from somewhere else or your mates go +1 or -1 tooth whilst timing it up??

It were proper Bo i tell thee!!

Sorry i'm a bit of a novice. I didn't quite understand what Matt meant about the timing, this guy who did the cam belt has supposed to have checked it twice now!!! What and where is the map sensor - I appreciate your patience this is all new to me

Is'nt there a timing sensor that points to the teeth on the bottom pulley??
He may of knocked this accidentally when doing the cambelt.

It were proper Bo i tell thee!!

I've found the MAP sensor but everything looks OK - it's all connected at both ends. However I did find a tiny hole in the pipe going from under the air filter to the air intake on the air filter, I've sealed it with some tape for now but it was very very tiny - could this be the cause of my problems? It didn't start first time why I tried it - not a good sign. Other symptoms i've noticed are that the car now sounds dog rough when it's warm with the awful sound of what appears to be pulleys and belts going around, also the cutting out is mainly when the fan is on - it's cut out a couple of times when the fan actually came on which seems to be when the temp is half way on the gauge. It also doesn't always fire up first time when it's got hot and doing its cutting out bit. I always seem to need a few more revs on when to stop all stalling when it's hot. Just one more thing, there's a hissing noise coming from above the gearbox area when I swith the engine off for about 3 to 4 seconds - it's done it all the time though and the "mechanic" said it was quite normal on these - I'm just starting to doubt everything he tells me.
i've tried to understand your all the advice about timing but it's beyond me - I'm going to ask my man again - what should i be asking him to do or check?
Thanks for all your help - driving test on wednesday!!!!

Matt may be right - there's a sensor on the crank pulley which can cause problens,
especially if it's been knocked or the pulley isn't on right. If you can hear the pulleys
howling it suggests the belt is far too tight or the tensioner bearing is shot.

If you're only in Barnsley, have a drive up the road to Boro if you like and I could
maybe offer some advice or asistance.:D
Or drop a 1242 in for ya;)

Thanks Pete for the offer, if i can't get it sorted I'd like to take you up on that. It would be good for someone who knows them like you to check it out thanks. I've just come back in and it cuts out even worse when the lights r on and can take four or five attempts to start it again. The pin hole in the pipe obviously wasn't the problem
How far r u from Barnsley - it could be my first trip out to your place providing I pass my test (wednesday)

How long would it take you to do this? cos i've been pondering on the thought of doing this for a couple of weeks now and mark sez he's still got a 1242 but never got round to doing it coz of his turbo. How much would you charge to fit it?;)
