General Cambelt......latest Prices & places '08

My nephew just learnt the hard way! Bought a Y reg polo for his first car, spent loads on the radio, alloys etc but skimped on the service which cost him dearly. The car was due a CAM belt when he bought it but as VW wanted quite a bit to change it he went for a basic service each time it went in, nett result was 3 weeks ago the CAM belt snapped at a roundabout and the result was a very expensive bill to re-build the top end of the engine, 2 new valves, a new piston and a shed load of labour charges!!

Moral of the story is don't buy a VW, erm sorry I meant don't scrimp on servicing the mechanics of your car 'cos it will cost more in the long-run!

:(

Same thing happened to my ex with his MGF - don't take the chance!

WOW good or WOW bad?

£279 at too bad

I think he means WOW bad but only because he knows what's involved in the job. TBH £300 for a job that you should not attempt unless you know what you are doing is not cheap, but in comparison with what it will cost you if it goes wrong its a drop in the Ocean!

DTR are not the cheapest but they do know what they are doing and they do not use cheap replacement parts..........

What exactly do they mean by 'reconditioned engine'?
Would that include new cambelt and variator as standard? I have got some paperwork and I can have a look later but wondered what it meant. I'm not sure how much detail there is in the paperwork.
If it doesn't say will I be able to find out if it had a new cambelt? I don't want to have to pay for new one fitted if it was only done a year ago.

Could mean anything from new headgasket to new block and depends who fitted it.

If it was fiat I would imagine that they would have fitted all new parts, however what I wonder is why a 3 yr old car would need a reconditioned engine?

I found the paperwork last night, it doesn't give any details about cambelt or variator. The reason they give for the new engine was something along the lines of 'opened sump crank shaft floating'. I'm sure that will mean something to you guys! The garage I bought the car from said that the previous owner had insisted on a replacement engine even though not really necessary as it was still under warranty.

I have the details of the garage that did the job so I think I'll get in touch with them and see if they can give me more information.

Sounds to me like a new block, possibly the sump cracked causing the crank and end bearings to sieze ?? I'm sure if that's the case they would have changed the cambelt and variator However the only way you are going to know for sure is ask.

Just booked mine in with a fiat dealer for a cambelt and a variator £395 for them both. My mate has a little garage and he says he could fit them but it seems rather a touchy job. If he mucks it up I will have no come back so I am going to bite the bullet and use the pros.

I would not use the words fiat dealer and pros in the same sentence m8, only bad things can happen. :D
Doc dont say things like that pleeeeeeaaaaaseeee :(. I have no mechanical skill and I want a good job done. i would go to Dtr but london is a bit of a drive for to get it done. do you know of any good service companies in scotland ????

I just got a call from the fiat garage that changed my engine. They said it wouldn't be listed on the invoice as if they replace an engine then the cambelt would be done as standard. They recommended 3 years or 36k miles for the change interval. So I shoud be ok for a couple of years, phew!

Hehe - FIAT dealers don't have the greatest reputation on earth but it all depends on their staff - bonus is that if anything does go wrong you can throw it back at them!!

I have just typed up an article/ letter for inclusion in the Lancia club mag on this very topic. If anyone can link/ host the pdf file for me, I'd appreciate the opportunity to post it on this forum

So, what mods are you going to spend the £300 you saved on the CAM belt on???? :D
I'd like some black leather seats with silver piping and also a new perfect windscreen without scratches, but we do want to go to a music festival in iceland this year and i hear its about 7 - 8 quid a pint so it might go towards that!

Iceland

but..., but, you can't sit in the shade with your pint there! They have only ONE tree! (and a pathetic one at that) :D

but they do have lots of gravel and MUD... which is a requirement for a music festival :)
