Technical uConnect Update?

Is it really essential to update the maps on any UConnect because they are by nature never up to date. Most additional roads are on the new housing developments and the nav system will get you near enough, if you cannot find the road a quick phone call to the address you are going to will talk you in. The occasional phone call, usually free, so saves about £200 per year up dating.

My issue is that it is now 2018, my maps are 2015. During the last three years several major roads round here have changed their layout, but most importantly, for me, is that some motorway junctions that I don't use often have changed their layout (e.g. M6/M1 junction) and the uConnect will attempt to send you onto the M1 heading in the wrong direction. it isn't only roads at the destination that might change. Bypasses etc en route for example. My personal view is that an out of date set of maps is unreliable and I am willing to pay for an update, but not £200 per year.

For me in three years (nearly) I've only updated once, and only because TOM TOM had an offer on.

I also have a Garmin with lifetime Full Euro Map updates which is available should I need more frequent map update.

For me the mapping only really becomes important when travelling across Europe to Fiat land. Here in the UK driving by GPS navigation I rarely do unless I'm targeting some possibly obscure city centre or residential street address.

One big bonus of SAT NAV, which my wife used to great effect, was to avoid London's Congestion Charging Zone. With the way cities are going all around the UK and Europe "toll zone avoidance" is becoming far more important.
