Ok - this is my main reason for logging on just now, so I could check something out with you all...

I've just picked up my new car - a 500C 1.2 lounge and the only things I specced it up with were leather gearknob, side strip and chrome mirrors.

...So I was a bit surprised to discover it's got 'start & stop'! Maybe I'm being a bit dumb, but I didn't think it was a standard feature? I'm not complaining (I think) but I was a tad surprised when it kicked in!!! I thought I'd stalled it at first! and then the next time I noticed the 'S' light come up on the dash when it 'stalled' and I started to twig what was happening. Because I wasn't expecting it, I hadn't read up on it and so didn't really know how to use it! It was a little bit dangerous tbh because there were a couple of times where I didn't do something right and it didn't start the first time and I was a bit worried the guy behind me would assume I was on the move and bump me!

But it seems that it kicks in if you stop and don't put the handbrake on and keep your foot on the brake? But doesn't kick in if you keep your foot on the clutch or handbrake on? I guess I'll have to read up on it! Is it possible to disable it I wonder? Not that I'm sure I'd want to once I get used to it.

Should I be surprised to have it? Or is it standard on 500C's?

start stop is standard on 2010 models - mines got it too :) You also have the message that suggests when you change up/down gear as well if it's like mine, ecodrive I think I've heard it refered to, I think the Abarth has it

oo forgot to say you should have a button on the air con panel (i think mines next to the back window heater button) that turns it off. you need to press this every time though.

I've been playing with mine and it stops the engine when you take your foot off the clutch and starts when you depress it again. That's been the same with other cars I've tried with this function

Doh what a thickie I am then! I guess because the one I test drove didn't have it, and it's not mentioned as standard in the brochure, it never ever occurred to me!

And nobody at any point along the ordering process has mentioned it! Ah well - a nice surprise :) I feel much more eco-friendly now ;-)

Sounds a bit confusing! I wish it made a noise or something when it kicked in! I guess I just need to look for the 'S' sign on the dash :)

Thanks guys! (even though i do feel a bit thick now haha). I'm off for a play now! :) x

Im a bit surprised the dealer allowed you to leave without explaining the features of the car. They are supposed to demonstrate things. Make sure when you get a call from Fiat CS or your dealer that you let them know that this wasnt done and you were surprised to find you car stalled at the lights !

I might be mistaken but I think the car is contract hire. and was`delivered to her home by transporter.

it really is pretty simple once u get into the habit...and the big giveaway its kicked in.....the engine turns off!!!!

Slighty worried now, Not that i'm really bothered about stop&start but mines a 2010 model and i can't for the life of my find it anywhere. Is it because i specced ESP? I don't have the button on the dash or the Change up/change down thing.

Where the stop and start button should be (i guess on the air con bit with the back window heater) theres a button marked ASR off.

I think that when you take delivery of a new car it is a very good idea to read the handbook from cover to cover, very carefully.

It takes a bit of time, but it is worth it ;)

I was replying to the OP.

If you don't know whether you have S&S, I'd take it to the dealer and ask. But surely, the handbook would explain?

As has been said, you really should read the manual to learn about it. Especially as you said it was 'dangerous' at one point. You will learn a LOT of cool features by reading the handbook, too.

From what i've read in the manual it seems that i don't have S&S. I was just under the impression that S&S is standard on all 2010 models?

I've rang the dealer and all the engineers have gone home, so i'll have to get to the bottom of it tomorrow.

Oh absolutely agree!!! But it was delivered to my office and I wasn't going to sit in the carpark reading the manual before I left for home! Especially as all I was planning to do was 'straightforward driving' and never crossed my mind it would get complicated! I'm planning an evening of handbook reading tonight so that I'm a complete expert by tomorrow. :)

I don't want to come across as some sort of ditz who would get a new car and not read the manual!!
