Which is safer?

Which is safer?

I remember when I had my Range Rover classic there was a story going around about a Citroen CX having gone into the side of a classic Range Rover at speed, and as it managed to miss the wheels it lifted the Range Rover and went right underneath it and out the other side.

This happened local to me.

This was on the A11 near Snetterton

Holy Sh8t!!!

I don't know whether to laugh or comiserate!

That guy's other job was a stunt man!

I see the yellow speed bumps didn't make any difference lol :)

Its possible, but could be a long tale. I remember my brother when he rode motorcycles used to tell a story about turning sharply and going underneath a lorry. People used to laugh :)

The standard of driving is generally pretty poor I think? There's a lot of selfish practice going on and many who take absolutely no pride in their driving or behaviour towards others. Most of all though I think is that many just don't take the conditions they find themselves in into consideration. So, people driving on the motorway with the same sort of separation to the car in front as when they're tootling around town. Failing to look anywhere except at the back of the car in front. How many ever look left and right as they take off from the traffic lights, almost none from what I see - lights go green, ok, foot to the floor! I could go on.

Use of mobile phones while driving should quite simply be banned all together, even if hands free. I've thought very hard about this and come to the conclusion that it's just too distracting. Holding the phone and doing stuff like texting, especially when actually moving, is insane - these people just need to be pilloried and shamed then have their phones confiscated. Even engaging in a hands free call is distractingly dangerous, especially if it's making you engage in important decision making (either to do with business or personal matters) It's dangerous because it diverts your main focus of attention therefore slowing reaction time. The only thing I might agree to is sat nav. My new car has this and I do find it useful, especially when it talks to me and tells me where to make a turn. Not so good when you need to look closely at it when a complicated junction is being negotiated because, again, you need to take your eyes off the road for too long to see the fine detail on the image. Infotainment touch screens should be banned as they need you to take your eyes off the road for too long and often repeatedly as you work your way through some of the menu items. Also, because there are no physical "buttons", you have to take your eyes off the road just to see which part of the screen you need to touch to activate some function. The range of functions is stupidly long too. I bet there are droves of, especially older people, who simply ignore these screens because they are too baffling. I'm not far off 18 months into ownership of my Scala now and there are things about the infotainment (silly word?) which I have no idea even exist but suspect are in there somewhere because of the "weird" unsolicited messages which appear from time to time.
I agree about mobile phones.

The other big distractor in a car is other people. A general scenario is i'm listening to my wife and miss a turn because i'm distracted. I find in new places even music distracts me, so i have to turn it off to listen and watch keenly. There are some accident hotspots nearby, every day i see nears misses, and i just tell anyone else in the car i need quiet.

For safety reasons...

If i miss a turn I'm one of those people who is happy to go down the wrong road and turn back, rather than dodging across lanes like many/most do. Its possibly the reason i've had no driving accidents in my life. Am i alone in doing this regularly? It feels like i've never come across anyone else who does it. Perhaps nobody admits to it?

I think this is the safest car you would stuggle to buy............

I mean you can crash at 150+ mph and walk away from the car unhurt, well what's left of the car :D

The land rover flipping over is interesting to see. Its got such large wheels it rode up the back of the other vehicle. A lot like a toy car can climb stairs if correctly engineered.

One of the advantages of a higher vehilce like a van or lorry is being able to see further along the road. I'm not sure how much of a safety advantage this is though?

The most effective way to not be injured in an accident is not to be involved in one indeed hence all the concentration on accident avoidance in Ncap.

Visibility is important if you practice defensive driving it can allow you to respond to perceived hazards before they become actual hazards.

Of course in general the vast majority of SUV and van drivers would only respond to hazards if they appeared on their mobile phone screen so largely a wasted advantage.

I did quite enjoy driving a transit for work the flat sides, massive mirrors and high position was good. But at the same time the brakes weren't that great, the handling was good enough but I'd have not liked to do a high speed swerve in it with 8 on board.

...or those absolute tribb's who sit in the lane, blocking it with the indicator on until someone in the correct lane they want to get into lets them in!

It's a little naughty, and something I've noticed, not actually (deliberately / intentionally) ever tried to do... BUT.... Those flashy big new cars with the people blatantly on their phone... you can be reasonably assured if the little light is working on their wing mirror to say 'no not change lane', that they have the auto-brake stuff fitted and enabled... if you happen to make your way in front of them in a fairly close way, their car will violently slam on its brakes without them expecting it and they'll get the shock of their life as their phone and Starbucks latte drops out of their hands. Best of it is, when they get mad and try to tailgate you some of the cars won't let them do that either.

Definitely not something any competent, safe driver would do, nor anything to 'teach anyone a lesson', but theoretically, such a fright might scare a phone-driver into perhaps paying more attention.

I had a break earlier in the year and talked to this guy in the hotel who couldn't drive, he told me about people he knew being terrified to drive, driving stoned etc. I was surprised he had quite so many stories.

I think those people need a self driving car.

True. I've never had an accident, so i don't really need any of them.

This begs the question, is there a way of making an older Fiat car safer in an actual crash by adding extra equipment?

It is also begs the question, if everything else on my cars need maintenance how do i know that the airbags are going to work if i needed them to?
NO!

Lol. I'm not worried really, just engaging in chit chat. I presume if the airbag was faulty I'd get a warning light. Well maybe, unless that's faulty lol.

I should get some more metal around myself. Wish I could get a tank, or lorry even. It might make parking at the coop difficult:)
NO, MUCH easier!
