whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

nope, if you use a wire brush, it will leave traces of it on the thing-y-ma-jig (help me here tom!) and the spark could travel down it, instead of across the gap.

always fit new ones.

Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

they are dry fouled (black) after 1 month of being fitted so would like to clean them until i get the problem sorted.

Ive been told to check my ignition timing (i know its a little advanced as of now) and also increase the gap size of the plugs slightly.

Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

Bin them, you MUST NOT clean spark plugs. £20 for a new set is cheap compared to £1000's for a rebuild cos you left a wire brush bristle down the side of the plug.

If they are black its not timing, its mixture. What engine size and how many miles? Its probably blocked air filter.

74,000 miles rover 216 coupe with honda 1600 16V SOHC 115BHP (standard) engine.

Dissy has been slightly advanced a few degrees.

the car has been virtualy overhauled since i got it with:

-oil, oil filter
-new dissy cap and rot arm
-New radiator
-fuel filter
-new universal induction kit
-spark plugs
-cambelt
-Ignition timing checked and advanced 1-2 degrees max.

The engine runs fine accept its got a slightly bumpy idle and it hunts as well. Doesn't start as easily as it should. Plugs have gone black in a day or two!!! Fuel economy seems reasonable but not fantastic. Get 60-85 miles for a tenner.

thanks for your help tom

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

are you sure these are the right plugs?

you said they were (dry) fouled, this is could be down to wrong spark plugs (too cold heat range).

it is unusual for it to happen on a nearly new set of spark plugs though.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

hmm, ive no idea about that really.

Right from NGK:

ROVER 200 SERIES HONDA ENGINE 1600cc 1995

Part Number: BCPR6E-11

Extra Information
Plug gap mm: Pre-set gap
No of plugs: 4

I'll go and see if i can find the box or failin that look tomorrow at one. thanks christian

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

ok the ones i have installed are the "correct" ones according to NGK.

However ive just pulled out my old plugs and they aren't quite so fouled yet very old!

"Bosch super R6 085"

With these plugs though, the car did have a very bumpy idle.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

they're the right ones according to my mates book.

Do you do a lot of short and/or slow driving?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

I suppose i have been doing a lot of short journeys since i got. Ive never been one for keeping the revs low though! :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

p.s. thanks for looking into this with me craig

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

cheers

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

BCPR6E-11

these are the correct ones. the other ones you mentioned are not listed.
i'm not ringing him again LOL;)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

If its hard to start and hunting then something is up.

Certainly dry and black does indicate cold running plugs BUT its also a sign of a rich mix (rich is colder).

Hmmm.. not really clear cut on this.

The qyestions are:
1) why has the dizzy been advanced?
2) what type universal induction kit and does it have a suitable cold air feed?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

Ok cheers tom.

Your gonna love this - right, the dissy was advanced for more power :). No power was gained or any disadvantages either so i left it. I will put it back as i marked the original position.

The induction kit:

although no cold air feeds are used, it remains cold to touch after a drive as the battery shields it.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

wouldnt they most likely be wet black though tom?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plugs?

Put the dizzy back to normal :) That should help the starting. The induction kit looks OK, should not be a contributing factor.

If you know someone with a gas tester it might be worth a check just to see if its running rich. Could always be lambda sensor.

Wet black is oil fouling, VERY bad. :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: whats the best way to clean my spark plu

If the car is fitted with a cat then it could be you have a lambda censor fail or even the cat your problem though is as tom said a ritch mixture not timing. If the car has no cat then the mixture can be adjusted via the fuel E.C.U that is under the front pasenger carpet the adjuster screw is on the underside of the E.C.U hope this help's.
