Daughter in law's been on the phone. She's decided her elderly 2008 Jazz has had it's day. Probably not a bad call as I've done two brake calipers in the last year and the Honda indy did another. One of the antiroll bar links needed done for it's last MOT and it broke a front spring last year - Steven tells me they usually do the rear ones so that was slightly unusual? needed a back box just before the MOT as well, just seems to be a continuous "dribble". Oh, also she's scraped it on all four corners so it looks very "tatty" and it's going to need tyres soon.

So, Grandad, as you mostly look after the car, what do you think I should buy? I know she likes the practicality of the jazz but they do hold their price very well and dealers seem to ask a premium for them. I like the looks of the Suzuki Swift or Ignis with the dual injector 1.2 - don't want the direct injection turboed Boosterjet thank you. Also like the looks of the Hyundai i10 and maybe i20. I'm a little put off the smallest VAG offerings after the problems my daughter has had with her Citigo's gearbox but also the MPI engine is pretty sluggish and I don't want to go direct injection.

That's as far as I've got so far. Anyone else want to make suggestions? I have an acquired and deep seated suspicion of French cars though. - Oh, got to be 4 door for the kids.

PS We're not looking "new" cars here folks, probably around 2015 or so.

Kia. A 2015 will still have manufacture warranty. Been very pleased with mine :)

Thanks Most Easterly. My older boy's "good car" is a 2017 Kia Rio 1.4 diesel, which was bought for his wife's daily commute out to Livingstone on the motorway every day - He runs back and forwards locally to his job in the Punto. The Kia's done the motorway journey for the last 3+ years and is clocking up the miles with nothing needed but regular servicing and a set of tyres. Her employer has now completely closed their office premises and has them all working from home with a monthly meeting at a venue (hotel suit) which seems to be working well. Of course the diesel was ideal for that journey but is now only running to the supermarket etc so I'm wondering how long it'll be before EGR and DPF problems start to appear.

After a couple of days of initial searching for a replacement for my younger boy's wife's jazz I'm finding it difficult to find anything which comes close to the practicality of the jazz and am reaching the conclusion that I'm probably going to be looking for a late generation 2 example. Still trying to expand the horizons though. The other approach would be to move up to slightly larger vehicles like the Rio but she likes the "parkability" of smaller cars. Mind you that second gen Jazz looks a bit bigger than the gen 1 she's running around in just now?

Son was having a quick blast of Forza this evening...crashed a mini into a tree. He's 3...so you know all he can do is donuts and go full belt across fields but he was having fun.

On hitting the tree he said in a Welsh accent no less "Oh no! Call Fireman Sam!

I’m at corporate HQ this week(ick). Previously I had written about our lousy and incompetent PA. Well, she’s gone now and the Production Manager is cleaning up her mess until they hire a new PA. Because I am the most senior tech guy in the US for our outfit, the PM flags me down and asks if I would help him go through these lists of parts that she was asked to order months ago but didn’t. Even though there were errors upon errors regarding part numbers, I got it knocked out in less than a half hour.

The CEO ambles by and asks what we were up to. The PM explains that if it wasn’t for me, it would’ve taken him a month to figure the mess out. He added that they don’t pay me enough. :)

Have you looked at a Toyota Yaris?

Parents bought a new one in 2001, replaced it back in 2014 and when looking we looked at the Jazz, seemed to get a lot more car for your money with the Yaris, and more toys etc.

I’ve not against the Jazz, but certainly at the time we got a higher Spec Yaris than what even the top of the range Jazz offered and it was about £3k cheaper also (on a 1 year old used examples).

Have you looked at a Toyota Yaris?

Thanks for making me think about that. I haven't actually looked at them yet because my impression is that they have a relatively small boot compared to the Jazz. However I haven't looked at a late model. I also hold Toyota in high regard, in fact one of my long time friends used to be a factory service agent for Toyota (he was one of the chaps the garages could call in to examine customer vehicles and make a ruling on warranty claims)

So thanks for that Most Easterly, I'll take a closer look!

Woke up this morning and looked out the bedroom window. Very rare sight opposite. We are on the inside of a gentle curve in the road - which is a dead end. Opposite us, on the outside of the bend, they made a small layby, which is big enough to accommodate 4 cars of average size but very rarely do you see more than three due to inconsiderate and incompetent parking. Today there are 4! Hurrah! But then I realized, First car is a black Fiat 500, base version, plastic wheel trims and no obvious "extras" - belongs to the girl who has recently moved into the flats opposite. Next is our friend's 500 twin air, Mid grey in colour, fancy black alloy wheels, glass roof and other bits - they also live in the flats. Then there's a slightly scruffy metalic grey Grande Punto with plastic wheel trims, another recent resident who lives in the flats (high turnover in the flats) and finally, not a Fiat I'm afraid, but a rather unusual convertible VW New Beetle - with very unusual wheels - which belongs to the wife of an Alfa Romeo Mechanic who lives in another small block of flats near the main road (are you "allowed" to own a VAG product if you're an Alfa Mechanic, wondering if I should be reporting him to the "Thought Police"?) So, with Becky sitting on our hard standing directly opposite it's a totally "FIAT City" here this morning! Pity about the beetle, but at least it's not something more mundane!

I've been following the thread about "advice on buying a 2013 500. A couple of posts mentioned that the 500 is a "cute" wee car which is often bought by people who are wanting a cute wee car but have no interest in maintaining it. The black 500 sitting in the bay opposite would seem to fit this description perfectly - never even seen her check the screenwash level.

Currently a diversion in place on the east coast mainline...

Why? Well an Azuma got stopped at a signal outside Hexham while we were out hunting conkers.

My son decided to keep yelling GO! at it and then got into a foot race with it when the signal went green.

On the subject of cute little cars people don't look after...

Must try and keep on top of this...so much easier to wash it fortnightly than scrape 8 months of crud off..

Bought it a present..a dehumidifier so hopefully it won't freeze on the inside this year.

This always brings a smile to my puss. Coming into Chicago from the east over Lake Michigan.

When I see this, I'll be on the ground shortly. I'll get the Ford out of hock and then it's another hour or so to my wife and home.
Picture taken out of the port or starboard side of the aircraft? This looks not unlike what you would see out of the Port (left) side of an aircraft when flying up the Firth of Forth going into Edinburgh.

Always such a nice feeling to be returning to the comforts and love of those waiting at home.

Next door recently bought this after years of running around in an old Bora:

It's an Arteon - a beautiful car but a strange word to use to name it? - I decided to google it: https://newsroom.vw.com/vehicles/9-things-you-didnt-know-about-the-all-new-arteon/ where I learned it's based on a Latin word, Artem. Wonder what made them think that might be a good idea as likely only old public school boys will make the link? Unfortunately it seems to be spending as much time in the dealers as at our neighbour's house due to the dashboard being more closely resembling the lights on a Christmas tree! Seems to support recent posts on this forum implying that VaG vehicle reliability is a bit of a myth? However I do feel a sense of jealousy when he parks it here outside our house!

I've seen a few Arteons around, but not sat in one yet. Looks like a posh Passat, with the roof curved to look like a coupe, much like Audi did with the A4/A5 and Mercedes with the C-class. Headroom in the back of the merc is poor, as expected, so it is all about style over substance. The way the world is going.

I guess I'm not the target market for these.

Port side, seat 3A, CRJ700. I had been napping when the announcement was made that we were landing. Took the pic at the right time.

jimboy-All my time spent in Chicago is at O'hare Airport, I'll get no closer. I live at the far western edge of what's known as the 'burbs, which is still rural/small towns. If the wind is right, you can smell the Dairy Air. Unfortunately, development is happening so folks who want to live in the country can also have their Starbucks and Taco Bell.

Myself, I live in an older development about two miles south of the town of Elburn, Illannoy. Very rural and very quiet. That is, until my neighbor fires up his 55 Chevy.;) The kind of place where you and your neighbors can stand in the middle of the road to yak and not worry about traffic.

Aye PB, whether it has a 12" or just a 10" infotainment (who thought that word up?) screen seems much more important these days than having a coolant temperature gauge! So, no, not for me either

I just looked up the price of a replacement tyre by the way - Pirelli P Zero 245/40 R19 Strewth! I could just about afford one if I sold wee Becky! My neighbour's a very pleasant chap and we chat often. He was telling me he's bought it as a retirement present to himself - Hope he's got a really good pension.

Short day today so off to the museum of the moon at Durham cathedral.

Quite good, other than us managing to pick both half term and the day Buzz Aldrins son was giving a talk.

So normal carpark had an insane queue...literally out of the front door down the road and across a roundabout. So while stationary had a quick scout on nav and there was an alternate 3 streets away.

Off we go and yes there it is and there's no queue and there's spaces. One problem a Land-rover discovery has had the same idea. Now there's big signs saying max clearance 1.8m...which he didn't read but the chains dragging on his roof got his attention at least. Being the nice gentleman I am, reversed out of his way to let him drag the chains back across his roof and find somewhere else.
