What's made you smile today?

Several weeks ago my wife and I were driving from Gretna towards Dumfries at exactly 60mph. We were followed by an SUV for a few miles when, as is their custom, he decided to nip past me so that we could better appreciate his diesel exhaust.
The road was deserted, and the night dark, but then I saw the blue flashing lights behind me. The police car came from nowhere and overtook both of us, before "pulling him in".
I know it's wrong to delight in the misfortunes of others, but I'm ashamed to say that I smiled.

December last I was driving to Glasgow area to be picked up by another car enthusiast on way to Carlisle. I was driving my daily, three cylinder, more than capable of 70mph and above if need be. From Perth onwards on the motorway it really was a bit disconcerting to say the least when SUV after SUV passed me at speed, it was a windy day I Remember and I was not hanging about myself, it was raining, biggest shock moment, and there were many, was a Porsche SUV passed at speed, lashing water and making my car jostle a bit more than I was comfortable with. At a good guess over a ton easy. The whooshing noise and the shear size did take me by surprise.

We have had our 2004 1.4 16 valve fiat Idea for almost a year now ...I went to Iraklion on Thursday ... a two and a half hour drive each way some on narrow roads , and some on the National highway at 100 kph /just under 70mph . And just for the hell of it I looked at the trip computer to find out what mpg/kpl I'm getting ...It seems I'm getting just a bit over 17 kpl /48 miles per gallon ....I pretty chuffed with that ... does that seem possible ?...

I was averaging 45mpg from my (very poorly maintained) MK2b Punto with the same engine, so seems reasonable.

Edit: Got 51.2mpg on a good run one time.

Oh good , so maybe that's about right ... our other vehicle is a Diesel 4x4 pickup and that is thirsty ...so the fiat is a joy.. it's had a good service and I fitted new coil packs this year , all in all it's a great little car that does not feel that little when your in it ...

Andy ... what are the problem parts on the idea ? ...ours looks like a keeper so I maybe should be stockpiling stuff for the future ...I've replaced the power steering gizmo and I will send the old one off to get it refurbed what else do I need to get hold of ? Buying car parts from a scrap yard is not a thing here if it's in the yard anything worth having has already gone .. Around here in Crete I see a few of the Lancia version.( the Muso? ) But I've never seen another Idea ...
Second hand cars here in Crete hold their value compered to the UK .. so I want to hang on to this one .. thanks ..J

The one I dealt with was a 1.4 duologic

Issues:

Flat battery on purchase..battery was 3 months old.. turns out they drove 1 mile to tesco..once a week  battery was ok

It was fithy on purchase.. I washed the outside periodically ;) owner didnt care..

Only proper issue.. airbag light : message went on and off over bumps
(Car was mega cheap)
Turns out it was a CatC repair... steel structures under dash were rusty.. probably the root cause.. again owner didnt bother..

I couldnt get MES to read airbags.. took it to Stanford Hall.. the multiplexed couldnt either

Had a puncture on M1 driving back.. nail

Owner said 3rd nail that week..!!

A cared for example.. like all FIATs.. would probably be fine :)

Pretty sure most are now scrap money.. :(

light iron scrap price went down to zero at 1 point the other day'

I gave our old idea to my sons other half but she never had money to insure it so its still sitting at her dads vicarage in trimley st mary. I had put on new shocks, new brakes inc discs, new exhaust new clutch. 4 new rainsport tyres. and its just sat there for 3 years. 1.4 16v low miles about 56k iirc

I can pm her number if anyone wants to buy it.

If you get a burglar shoot the b****r. It's not like burglars tell anyone where they'll be working tonight. Bury the body at the bottom of the garden. But if anyone does find the remains - tell em you ordered top soil from Fred West.

Jim Davidson.

What could possibly go wrong :D
