I wonder? "Bluey" as the Scala is now "officially" named by my grand daughter, does it's updates over the air. I just confirm it to do it by tapping the request on the "TV" screen on the dash. Sometimes it says "do not drive vehicle whilst updating" and advises you to authorise it overnight.

I do wonder if the reason they could get into the steering only is it has the Nissan pro-pilot system and I believe that can be over the air updated, perhaps it also sends and receives live data.

Do not drive while updating maybe more to do with for example losing the virtual instruments while travelling.

One of those things it may be always on but in theory the engine bay ECU and anything steering or brake related could not be connected directly to the online part of the car. Would make any updates a dealer job but I'd bet 99.9% of updates needed cover nav and infotainment things which in theory the car works without.

Thought they don’t say it in that article I remember years back they could control the brake block for the ABS allowing the hackers to individually lock up just one or two wheels, and activate the fly by wire throttle, this was years ago on cars without electric steering, so I’d be very surprised if this hack couldn’t give them that level of control as well.

There is also nothing made that can’t be hacked one way or another. It’s how easy the hack is, that determines how much of a problem it presents.

I suppose it depends on how many hoops they have to jump through.

In theory this stuff has been possible for years, the aforementioned demonstration in a transporter would be over 10 years ago but at the same time you'd notice a bloke sitting in the passenger seat with a laptop, also that laptop had to be kept under lock and key and anyone who used it required a sign in with VW. So in terms of being a useful thing for those who would want to cause harm not really applicable.

However being able to access the same sort of thing remotely without the correct credentials is more the concern. As you say anything is hackable in theory but in practice it just needs to be difficult enough to be not worth the effort.

Some of the big super markets sell them, so maybe Mrs J has been secretly feeding them to you.;)
Something else I quite like is a good real bakers made Steak and Kidney pie, often asking for a "snake & pyg***pie, sadly most good bakeries in our area have closed down due to supermarket competition.
In the 70s we used to have good local large grocers called Moores that did really good pies and pasties for our morning tea break I even learnt the other day that our Sainsbury doesn't cook many types of bread in house any more.
No wonder it is getting hard to buy a good tasting loaf.:(

Not sure if I've ever had a Melton Mowbray? Usually buy - and it's not something we do often as Mrs J says they're "unhealthy" - whatever is on the shelf at Lidl/Aldi/Morrisons/Sainsburys/Tesco.
You should try one. Definitely a level up. (If your teetch are not falling out LOL)

I arrived at Melton last Monday on my way back from Cheshire. I had refused E10 100 miles earlier and driven 75 miles with the fuel light on... Nothing showing on the fuel guage at all for over 10 miles. I was really bricking it. Then at last I saw a sign Melton 1 3/4 miles. My first thought seeing that sign, was hooray I can walk from here to get some juice if necessary. I called at the first place I found, and paid a totally stupid price for a fill up. (£54) I was really shocked at the cost. Annoying as Tesco was apparetnly just round the corner, more so as it wasnt dry and I could have got there easily. It only swallowed 35 litres so there was at least 1.5 litres left. I then drove home at the 'Ahhhhh, Ive just filled up after the running out of petrol scare speed'.

The round trip fairly well loaded, Noop managed 49.6 (car) or 49.1 real mpg. Not bad running with the fast traffic on the motorway. He feels so much smoother and happpier after a good quick long run. Not a drop of oil consumed it seems, so good full marks awarded.

Morrison's around Christmas time used to do a really good sort of game pie, but mostly chicken turkey and pork for around £2 a slice, one time they had an offer and I bought the whole pie for £11, kept it in the fridge for a treat, bit at a time.
No even on a good day I couldn't scoff the lot!
Though as an apprentice we used to park our cars in the local Pub car park, one morning they had a tray of pasties disappear and the other mechanics joking said it was me, as when I drove to our local bakery for the whole garages order of pasties and loaves etc. before our morning tea break I used to buy three pasties and have eaten two before getting back to the garage as I was a growing lad.;)

I tried to access the full article from the people who did the hack but kept getting a dead link.

I suspect though that the hack wasn’t something that anyone can do with a basic knowledge of windows and power point.

I found another article where they built the electrical system of a leaf out of junk yard parts to experiment on and it was quite involved to get it to do anything they wanted it to.

So there is the complexity of the hack, but there is also how involved it is.

It’s not going to be a very useful hack if the ignition has to be on, you need to be sat near the car with a laptop and you need about 2 hours of playing about with it as it’s not a very realistic scenario.

Now your talking. There is a family butchers in Lechlade that does the best steak pies I have ever had. Unfortuately they were closed the last twice I have been past. I want to buy a pile for the freezeer and no longer have reason to go that way to pass, so a special trip is required. I used to go regularly when working. With a portion of good chips it was a really tasty supper on my way home from the southwest area. Made up for the fact it was supper time and I was still 170 miles from home.....
