Oh dear, was it an oak? I never was much good at IDing trees.
There are several old Oak trees growing along the side of the river Exe, it's a nice walk from Starcross direction up to the pub.
Strangely that tree has been down for well over a year but still has leaves and some life in it, even though it has rotted at the base which has caused it's demise.
It is a popular cycle route and pretty flat which is why I often complain about the amount of "bicycles" that are battery propelled along it, this seems to defeat the object slightly. After all if a 71 year old and a 3 year old can manage the full walk both ways and only one needed topping up with cheeseburger and Guiness fuel for the return?
Maybe it's the "Lycra appeal" ;)

Well, visit to "uncle Arnie" this morning with Bluey the Skoda, and I'm not quite sure how it's left me feeling.

To avoid any misunderstandings over warranty I bought a 2 year service package when I bought her back at the beginning of the year (end of Feb '24 actually) and I'll just let them do their "thing" with her 'till the warranty's out. However, being a pre-reg she was actually registered on the V5 end of Nov '23. Due to this I was expecting to get a service reminder for Nov but the service reminder just popped up on the dash on Saturday when we came home stating "oil service in 28 days"! Popped into "Uncle Arnie's" about an hour ago and asked what they wanted me to do and why had the warning come up so prematurely. No-one really was prepared to make a decision and kept on throwing it back to me as to when I'd like to book it in. No explanation as to why the warning had popped up so early.

Well look, said I, she was registered on the V5 as end Nov '23 and has only done 3,200 miles with slightly more than that motorway mileage. The oil looks as clean as a nice glass of white wine by the way. So surely sometime in November would be reasonable? If that's what you'd like to do sir? For goodness sake, I'm looking for some guidance here so I don't invalidate the warranty, asking me what I'm happy doing is irrelevant surely? Well, luckily, at that moment the senior service advisor who looked after the Ibiza 'till it's warranty expired, came through the door from the workshop so I excused myself from the "advisor" I was talking to and outlined the position to her. Ah, I bet it's on an extended service regime, said she. They get a bit "twitchy" with low mileage running and tend to flag up an oil change early. So should I just leave her 'till November? (I'd appraised her of the type of running she's been doing) should be Ok was the reply, but if you're worried we can just book it in now. Well, if I leave it to Nov - it'll cover maybe another 500 to 750 miles - will it affect the warranty? Can't see why it should was the reply. So I'm going to leave it 'till Nov and make sure they switch the service interval on the car's computer to yearly.

I'm a bit grumpy though because no-one really said "This is exactly what you need to do". As long as I'm complying with the terms of warranty, which I've been assured I am, then I suppose I should just be happy with that?

I would just make a note of who advised you and when, so if any failure to honour a claim comes back you have an answer.

There's a choice of 12month/10k miles, or variable servicing. Short journeys tend to upset the variable monitor, and of course, when next is unknown. VAG show different oil specs for each choice, but most VW specialists will use the higher spec oil for all. Probably best to change it to annual, rather than variable. Should be able to do it in the centre screen menus, like my Fabia. If not, your VCDS will do it, or ask them to set to annual when you get the service done.

Thanks Mike, Luckily I'm well known to that particular senior service advisor as it's her who handled the warranty claim for the Ibiza's turbo, I even get to call her by her first name! I'll note today on the calendar though.

Thanks Nigel. I did ask them to be sure the car was set to annual service intervals when I bought her - doesn't mean they did though! I'll have a play with the "infotainment" screen and see what's achievable. I know how to the reminder reset using the display button - it's the same as the Ibiza. so maybe I'll just get rid of the warning meantime.

Most of my customers did very low yearly mileages, but were happy for me to give a proper service once a year with MOT as well, so they they knew they were safe, a lot can go wrong when servicing times was extended as a selling point.
Apart from that short journeys contaminate oils as engines never reach operating temp.
Much the same if Mot interval extended.

Absolutely, agree with every word Mike. Wouldn't ever consider extended interval servicing myself. I keep impressing on the kids, now I'm not going to be doing their regular servicing, that combining the MOT and yearly service is such a good idea. Not sure if they're all on the same wavelength though.

Personally I've always tried to separate MOT and service, so two big bills don't become one enormous one, but with vehicles much more reliable these days, perhaps less of an issue. I do see the advantage of the MOT being a reminder for a service.
Two of my vehicles have MOT and annual service due in January. Not the best time to be grovelling around cars doing any repairs. Tempted to get them MOT'd again staggered through the summer, but laziness has overtaken that for this year. But then, it has been rather hot to be working on vehicles too, so can't win. Just gearing up for a few jobs to catch up on, hopefully before the weather breaks again.

Weather's been pretty grim up here today. VERY heavy rain to start, coming down stair rods as they say with back garden awash. then low visibility misty until mid afternoon. Rain now stopped but everything soaking wet.

Somehow I seem to always end up with cars which have MOTs in the dead of winter so I'm trying to get everything done by the end of summer then hoping they pass when due in the new year. It's a plan which has worked quite well over the years. However, with the family now insisting that Granddad takes a bit more of a back seat and none of them having the slightest interest in working on their cars, or being even vaguely competent, I thought they might remember to get them serviced if it was due at the same time as the MOT.

They will if you need to claim.... Make sure if you need to claim that the warranty people are the first you speak to. As its a main manufacturers warranty you ought to be able to decipher exactly whats needed from the blurb in your service book.

Personally I'd make sure you get to read the warranty TS and C's..they may be online somewhere.

I know for a fact the PSA ones included the line all services must be completed within one month or 1000 miles of falling due.

Thanks, need to do some more checking I think.

Hopefully they will be somewhere on Skoda website...as little paragraphs like this can be a Bastard if something happens and they want to get out of it..

I've just been out sitting in the car trying to find what service regime it's on and whether I can easily change it. Managed to get into the part of the menu concerned with servicing but couldn't see any way to change it. The message is "oil service and inspection due in 26 days or 6,000 (and a bit) miles. I could do the reset using the trip button on the instrument cluster, same as I used to on the Ibiza.

My VCDS interface is so old that it doesn't communicate properly with more modern models so I doubt if I can easily change this myself.

Now back indoors and browsing through posts in the Briskoda forum where I've learned that she almost certainly comes from the factory defaulted to variable interval servicing which can be altered to distance/mileage at the dealer.

I'm also speculating that because she was a pre reggie deal - actually registered in the V5 November '23 - but held in store somewhere and put on the road for me March '24, She may well have been PDI'd end of September? If so that would account for the car itself thinking it's due service 26 days from now? - I would guess the "clock" starts ticking from the PDI date?

Anyway, I'm not going to try to be "clever" so I'm going to book her in for service before the end of this month and ask them to reset the regime to fixed mileage/time based. I'm just not prepared to risk the warranty eligibility being questioned.

This means I can get it all done and dusted before I go in for the hip replacement so Mrs J won't have to stress out delivering it to the garage and driving it back home afterwards because I won't be able to drive for some time after being under the knife. So there, feeling much happier now the decision is made, I'll ring them tomorrow and see if I can book it by phone or if I have to attempt to do it on my laptop.
