What's made you grumpy today?

I had another scam phone a few days ago and as it was a human I gave then both barrels, I said "I have enough grief in my life with f**king ar*eholes like you trying to take my money, so f*** off!
I am sure it will continue, but it at least gave me a few moments satisfaction:)
Yep Ive done similar, but had to slow down as my doctor rings on a hidden number, I answer and there is often a long pause. These scammer though make you reallly want to lash out. Plusnet rang today and acknowledged Idid ask for a phone and their rep did everything wrong. We no longer have a home phone! Therexis nothing that can be done either. It and our number for 35years are history. I accepted apology as they did basically not hide their mistake. 2 months free internet seems small compensation but at least Im not going mad. Rare for a big company to admit and apologise these days. Upside is no more scam call....

Back in the spring I renegotiated our broadband/phone contract with Sky. They told us that our street will shortly be going to full fibre and our copper landline will be permanently disconnected and offered to install fibre for us free of charge as part of the concessions to stay with them. I agreed and they then asked some questions, one of which was "do we have mobile phones". Well we do, but they are Dumb phones I said. That's Ok they said, it's just that with fibre your house phone will operate through the broadband router so if the broadband goes down you loose the house phone therefore, being over a certain age, they need to confirm we have an alternative way to call the emergency services in that eventuality.

The installation was actually done by Open Reach, not the SKY engineers and I've seen Open Reach at other houses in the street recently so assume everyone is slowly going over to fibre.

If you need a fibre landline to work during power cuts, you could always get a small UPS* and plug your router into it (and phone base unit if needed). That'll keep it working, at least until the battery goes flat.
(I've had UPSs for years as our power supply was pretty flaky for a long time. It's better now, but still nice to be on line when the lights go out!)
Telecoms companies were supposed to have been working on plans for this for years to support vulnerable users, but I haven't heard much recently.

* Uninterruptible Power Supply

Yes BT said about this and can supply at extra costs, also I have three landline phones on that line, where they only offer one and via this digital connection, even if battery/UPS back up.
It is also a problem for alarm systems and old folks emergency call systems.:(

I asked as above but it meant I would lose my landline in the event of a power cut, so I am now off contract at an extra cost of £6 per month.
I had a Fiat-Abarth-driving Open Reach engineer called Steve round, when we went to Vodafone a month back. He said he will join the forum but I havnt seen him on here yet so will leave him a reminder. He parks at the local exchange 300 yards away! He pointed out that nearly all phones now are cordless and mains powered, and that they dont work in the event of a power cut so you may be no worse off. He pointed to our phone and confirmed it would not work in the event of a cut. I would however prefer a proper phone as a backup. Plus net clearly state on their web site no phone, but I rang direct without looking at that, so was misled. (satisfactirily resolved) Plus net use BT routers and like the vodafone router it has a phone outlet, but no dial tone. All this is no doubt product differentiation from EE and from BT.

Vodafone was OK and is very cheap at the moment but their router was far too weak to reach my solar inverter. Customer service though is a nightmare, The whole broadband thing is a fair sized rip off perhaps we should set up a FIat Forum Broadband service. LOL

Always sad losing a pet, the little critters leave a big hole.

My uncle died early this year, but he still keeps getting letters demanding he get a TV licence, or they'll take enforcement action. I've tried their automated system to advise the house is empty, but it fails every time. I was at his house a while back, when a knock at the door revealed a licence enforcement agent, demanding to speak to uncle. "I'll get him", I said. The guy nearly fainted when I returned with the little casket containing his ashes, and the nice little plaque with his name on. "He's always been a good listener" I said, "but he's not such a good conversationalist any more." Despite the guy going white, and promising to update the records, the letters continue. Looking forward to taking him to court.

I think BT own both Plusnet and TalkTalk, as well as EE, so choice is more limited than it looks. Our street was recently dug up, twice, so we now have both Gigaclear and Virgin available in the street.
BT have threatened us with the loss of copper. That will need a bit of jiggling with my house cabling. My router is upstairs, as my desktop and printer are wired to it, not wi-fi. The printer is then a network printer, and will print from any of my computers (desktop, three laptops). With the changeover to fibre, they say plug the phone into the router. But I want my master phone, with anwering machine, downstairs, not hiding it the office.

We had troubles with TV licensing in Manchester and I told them in the end in no uncertain terms not to darken my door or else. You can explain to them the house is uninhabited, uninhabitable and empty with no one living there except me, the builder, and I had my license, until you are blue in the face. They are beneath contempt. We how have the same thing at my other daughters home, and they wont get much in the way of civility oif they make the mistake of coming round.... We need a 1000ft deep mine shaft in the porch. Do come in and have alook around. I would explain the situation but I have better things to do with my time talking to them that neither listen nor hear. There is no word in the English language to describe the attutude of that organisation. A new word is needed. Ifthey have the ability to adjust the records Im a Dutchman. Im tempted to fund yourcourt action!! Trouble is I am now nearly completely broke. Hard luck Mr Starmer no more tax coming from this direction!

Half-way through replacing the first suspension leg on the Fabia, and the kitchen light goes pop. It is an old flourescent tube. Whislt new tubes are still available, the internal gubbins have failed, so the whole thing needs replacing.
The new fancy LED unit has just two wires, and with its flush fitting, expects the junction box to be in the ceiling. Usually at the ceiling rose, there are 10 wires to be accommodated. The old fitting housed these easily. Now I've either got to just stuff the choc block connector into the ceiling, and hope it does not get hot enough to burn the house down, or dig a huge hole and push a connector housing up in there, or mount a ceiling rose on the ceiling, as if to have a single hanging light, and connect the new strip light to that. It'll look ugly, but if I don't look up, it'll be fine.

Thank you for your kind thought. I don't think court will cost much. I'll just turn up with the box under my arm, just a relative accompanying his 94 yr old uncle to court. It is not me they'll be prosecuting, and I doubt they can argue in any court that he needs a licence.

Did you have the Fabia on the table or just on the draining board Lol.

I would bet that they will argue just that.
He may be listening on headphones in that urn, you will have to open it so we can check......

The guy who last lived in Rachels house died 18 months ago at significant age from demetia, but that didnt stop then sending a letter every month demanding a response.

Nobody Sneeze!
It really makes you wonder what is the point of reporting someones demise. I have to say that BT were even worse. I eventually rang the big cheese at the top and suggested I might make an appointment and sort it / him out. At least that got a prompt result. It really shouldnt have been necessary.

I called at a local heating firm yeaterday. Their main engineer was killed in an RTA last year. The secretary was saying she called the phone company to cancel the phone account. Result? The phone company demanded a copy of the death certificate! As a company with self employed and employed staff they dont have one. I really do'.t know if it is necessary, but the phone company said.... we want a copy of the death certificate. That one really needs the BBC involved I think. There must be tens of thousands of people trying to get out of phone contracts by fraudulently alleging a death. Maybe that company contract was also with BT. It would explain it. LOL

Just about all internet broadband is openreach, i think only virgin fibre are separate to them.
Last year a new company round hear installed new cable routes into all the houses for Gigabit fibre broadband, something like Gigaclear or something is the name of the company, apparently they are rural broadband specialists

Also with 5G a lot of the mobile phone companies offer Broadband via the cell network if you live in an area with a good enough reception, then finally you have the likes of starlink which are brilliant if you like downloading but terrible if you ever upload anything as upload speeds tend to be terrible.
