Also asking me to cut up my old license and send it to DVLA

Once I'd racked my brains as to how long we'd lived in this house and what my passport number is and found my driver number, and remembered what my Mum's maiden name was, etc, etc, it all went quite smoothly. There were no requests for medical confirmations other than for me to make declarations - same as it was last time I did it 3 years ago. Got an email back from them confirming receipt of my application and saying my details would now be submitted for validation and once DVLA has completed their checks it will be processed as soon as possible. Also asking me to cut up my old license and send it to DVLA - Think I'll wait until the new one comes though?

So, all in all, not that difficult to do. Good guidance on the questions regarding "infirmities" which I wasn't quite sure on. For me that was relative to a small problem I have with one eye. My optician has told me I have perfect vision in one eye and a small compromise in the other but it's not something which I need to notify them about - The guidance totally confirmed this so I'm a happy man.

Just got to wait now and see what happens.
I wonder if its just internet fake news. There is so much hogwash swilling around these days you do have to double check and cross reference everything, I have seen a couple of similar things that worried me this year but all have been irritating speculation probably resulting form a i. he last big one was needing to get rid of my paper driving license, That was fake.

Mrs J's is due too. She's actually away at her sister's just now - Sister isn't in very good health. Anyway I rang her earlier this evening to let her know all had gone well with my application and she asked me to look up her NI number as she had decided to just do hers as well. I got an email from her just a few minutes ago to say all had gone well and she'd not encountered any requests for medical info etc.

So, all I can say is it's gone well for both of us so far. Doesn't mean they may not come back at us once they check it all out I suppose?

I have less than 2 years free license and I will be on remand like you. It sounds a PITA. Do you have to pay as well?

I've just spotted this.... !!

You can use this service to renew your British driving licence if you’re 70 or over, or will be 70 in the next 90 days, and:
  • your British licence has expired – or it’s going to expire within 90 days
  • you’re a resident of Great Britain (there’s a different service in Northern Ireland)
  • you meet the minimum eyesight requirement
  • you aren’t prevented from driving for any reason
  • You aren't the owner of an Umbrella equipped vehicle of any sort
Once you reach 70, you must renew every 3 years.

I'm nearly 80 now so this is the third time I've had to do it. They send you an invitation to renew about 90 days - give or take - before your existing licence expires which also contains paperwork so you can apply that way and mail it to them if you prefer. However, probably because of staffing issues, I believe it can take a long time before you hear from them doing it by mail and if there's issues you might run out of time before it's resolved! So I do it on line and, to be honest, it's not too bad to do. They obviously want to establish your identity so there are questions like what's your mother's maiden name, what's your driver number (it's on your old license), how long have you lived at your present address, what's your national insurance number, etc. All pretty easy stuff to answer. Then there's a raft of questions about your health which is really a tick box exercise. Frankly if I can do it anyone can. As I believe in giving honest answers the only thing that bothers me is the uncertainty as to whether they are going to question or suspend your license. However, so far, I don't have any health problems which affect my ability to drive but I still find the wait unsettling.

Edit. No you don't have to pay, it's a free service. However they warn to be sure you only apply via the Government website as there are others who you can use but will charge you for it. - It's a www.GOV.UK type site. They give the on line address in the paperwork

Jock,
Once youv'e registered and done it online, subsequesnt renewals are far less trouble, as they now hold all the required info electronically, so it's just a question of informing them of any changes, and even more simple than the original application, as they done't need all that NI, passport, photo, etc (though they do offer you an option to 'update your photo' if you want to.
Did mine electronically as soon as I was 70, and the renewal last year was easy, quick and simple. My new licence came through within about 10 days, though the original application at 70 took almost a month, presume this is because they do check the info you gave them to verify. Once it's verified, probably just a box tixking job on renewals.
(Welcome to the digital world my old friend!!) See, it's not that difficult, even for us 'oldies' .

Yes I agree with you in that I really didn't find it very difficult to do. However, and this is my third time of doing it, it did ask me for my NI number, passport number, etc although I didn't have to update for a photo. Ah well, it's done now. I'll just have to wait and see what comes back. Hope I haven't "cocked it up" in some way? I'll let you all know when/if it arrives on the front door mat.

I know someone, my aunt, that accidentally declared (not sure how) that she was blind and had a right rigmarole trying to sort it out.
Ten years on and she’s pondering not reapplying, like my mum, as keeping a car is just too expensive to just ‘nip to the shops’. She’s tight though, so won’t get a taxi, just relays on my daughter for ‘big shops’!

Yes, it's very easy to muck it up big time and then a complete nightmare trying to extricate yourself. In the "good old days" a few minutes talking to a "real person" would sort this kind of thing out. Someone we know very well indeed suffered Postpartum Psychosis - What? No, I'd never heard of it either - It's a very serious situation if the person is badly affected, hallucinations being the mildest of the problems. Anyway, this particular person got it bad and had to be hospitalized in a secure ward. It took some weeks for her to recover to the stage where she could come home but the doctors advised informing Swansea. Actually I think they did it? anyway, it resulted in her license being withdrawn. Some time later she more or less got back to normal and her doctor passed her as fit to drive. Took almost 18 months to get her license back! The big problem was that none of it could be done on line, it all had to be done by good old pidgeon post and came to a stop when the person at the other end was obviously too busy to be able to deal with it. When you rang them, after waiting for the phone to be answered "for ever" noone could tell you anything, not even how long it was likely to be before you got a reply. All this caused a lot of stress for a person trying to recover from a mental illness who now couldn't even drive to the shops to do the weekly food shop. We did hundreds of miles running around for her and looking after the kids.

By the way, for anyone trying to cope with this condition, It's taken a few years for her to get back to "normal" - and there were times when we despaired that day would ever come - but we've got there (by, currently, about 95% I'd say) so don't despair, it's a mental condition but. with care and support, it would seem that it can be, pretty much, completely recovered from. Doesn't happen fast though.
