What's made you grumpy today?

My garden gate has now shrunk so much the bolt is useless. It will no longer stay closed. Im going to drill teh end of the bolt and put a self tapper in the end with some PVC pipe pushed over to extend the bolt by a couple of inches. Someone suggested wetting the gate and post but its so dry that would just not work. It would just dissappear without trace.

I think they're really not awfully worried about it because most people are not getting very seriously ill with it now most of us have had the injections, and to hell with the rest? All our testing stations seem to have disappeared but the vaccination centres are still in evidence. I think the intention now is that you buy your LFT kits, test yourself and exercise restraint as you deem necessary? I think the powers that be are much more concerned now with getting us all making money so we can pay our taxes?
Id rather eat my own head than pay taxes to these ***************** idiots!

If you can still manage to fly at your age you should be smiling. However hard I flap I remain on the ground permanently delayed.
Hah Hah:) I hadn’t been to an airport for two months and realized yesterday that I didn’t miss it.

I was supposed to fly Chicago-Dallas-Charleston yesterday. I got to Dallas an hour late, my connection was delayed an hour, then two, then three, then cancelled. New flight I got booked on was already delayed two hours, that was delayed another two hours before it was cancelled. I ended up spending the night in Dallas at a not very cheap hotel. I have a mid afternoon flight today to see if I can get Charleston. If it ends up being a repeat cluster, I will just cancel everything with my former employer(I’m a consultant for them now)and tell them to not call me anymore.

Good God man you are a glutten for punishment. That tribe really sounded like they would tax the patience of a purple hearted saint!!!

Or tell them to lay on proper transport - private jet.. I hope you pass the bill on weighted for the wasted time.

Im glad its not just UK with these problems. My son (now a US citizen) is from from New York state. Hes over here with his wife on Friday...... we hope.
His internal flight from London to Scotland has already been cancelled and hes having to hire a car and drive. Its about 450miles. He thinks its an easy days drive, but my experience is its better over two days. Heavy traffic all the way and speed cameras everywhere mean its no fun. I did persuade him not to drive electric in the highlands of Scotland as charging might not be so straightforward hes reluctantly given in to that. His return flight from Edinburgh has been re routed from London Heathrow to London City Airport I expect hell need to pay teh congestion charge unless hes hired electric again. which is on the opposite side of London. Train drivers are striking and Taxis so expensive its hire another car to drive back to heathrow. No compensation of course.

I wonder if electric cars come to you fully charged when you hire or if you are expected to charge before you drive. Ill be in UK its the latter. Hism Mrs is n intolerant New Yorker so I hope form teh car hire companys sake Im wrong!

I know that Hertz bought several thousand Teslas but I don’t rent from them, so I haven’t a clue. I always up the cars when I return them so I don’t have to pay the 100% mark up on fuel.

An Intolerant New Yorker? That describes just about everyone along the coast between Maine and North Carolina.:) Though I find their bark worse than their bite. In other words, they’ll give you the shirt off their back yet cuss you out in the process.

Thats our Victoria!

Anyone wanting to fly must be really dumb to think there's no risk given all the new coverage. You are free to take your chance, but dont moan about it when it all goes wrong.

Well it is for grumpy old g*ts.
I think the non-PC phrase needed is man up, learn to predict and deal with it, it's not difficult, just something most moddern brits cant manage.
In his dee-fence he is an American and its pretty clear that the delays there are nothing like they are here. Im dreading my daughter in law coming over and toungue lashing our poor brexit bashed, poverty struck populus for all our current woes...... At least shes not afflcited by the inability to speak properly and she does say noo-clear weapons, not new-killer weapons. That would be one step too far!

I thought this was what the grumpy thread was for.

I average 65 flights a year and will be the first to admit that I screwed up by connecting through Dallas instead of Philly or Reagen. Dallas had a major storm, something like 12” of rain in 24 hours and I was oblivious. Delays are part of traveling for a living. And airports suck in general. Also, at 66+, I have earned my grouchy old fart badge.

Panda Nut-Tell your DIL that the old grouch from Illannoy said, Eff the Jets and Giants, Go Pack Go. She might get it.

Oh yea, lets carry on with the grumping! It's good for the mind, relieves tension, and is entertaining for us all?

Whilst I'm still "wedded" to my IC engined vehicles, I don't see us moving to a battery powered car anytime soon, however I'm becoming much more energy/pollution aware and I/we are actively reducing our energy needs, partly because of costs but also to "save the planet". With air travel being held up as such a gross polluter can we really all go on flying as much as you do? I'm not having a "dig" at you man, I'm just despairing generally at our species inability to act to reduce atmospheric pollution and aviation seems a good place to start?

It'll depend on CO2 emissions per passenger per Km.

From Cheests former posts I seem to remember he does field engineering which can't be done remotely.

A 737 emits about 115g per passenger per km...so similar to a supermini...but significantly less than a Ford F series pick up.

So in terms of trips that must be made flying is probably the best option compared to one man in a car that emits somewhere over 250g per km on the interstate at 90.

Obviously flying for leisure is a different thing in that all the emissions are strictly speaking unnecessary. But where do you draw the line? No TV because it's using electricity to do nothing useful etc.

But there are some fairly basic considerations..eg flying to New York and back once emits the same CO2 as all my driving for a year just for me...never mind all the other passengers.

If it was up to me, I’d never set foot in an airport ever again. But, I have one more plane ride today. Bleah!

Well son and DIL now not coming. Ha! She let her passport run out and only found out at 13:12 today. Its going to cost thousands in lost air tickets, cancelled hotels etc and he is fuming. Apparently his green card was going to run out before his citizenship was confirmed and he was blase about this. She gt really o mad and told him he would be deported so ther was a huge row and he was in the dog house for a week or two.... What comes around goes around as they say, but I'm disappointed the trips now off till November. Im trying to calm him down and get him to chalk a huge loss down to experience from the other side of the pond, it seems quieter now than a few hours ago thank god. It hasnt helped that to rebook with teh same airline they want another £300 more than he can buy another ticket on the net. Thats Virgin for you. I wont be rushing to use them. The upside is a large fridge full of posh grub and Im incharge of eating it!

Wow! Go New York on her. 🤬
Even having a US passport renewal expedited isn't quick nor cheap anymore. I reflexively went to look at mine after reading that because it was in my pocket. Phew! 18 months left on it. Even here, I won't walk into a US airport without it. Much easier to get through TSA Security with it.

My passport expired while working in South Africa in early 2001(I blame my current employer for that one). I was able to go to the US Consulate in Durban to get it renewed. It took four hours and thirty bucks. Those days are long gone.

Me too mines Mar 23 so need to renew now. Its too easily done. Its cost them a pile of money. Just think how many cream cakes that could have bought. All rebooked for November. I dont know if they are still doing Scotland though. Last time it was a problem here that required a 90mph drive over 150 miles. We arrived 5 minutes after the passoprt office shut UK passports has her US documents just after they married. I was able to charm the security man to rummage in the post out box in the office and nd we got hold of it and then drove back to London another 200 miles. DIL said she wouldnt drive with me agin.. Moody cow!!! We got there....... What more did she want. It might have been a little hairy, but what the hell.
