What's made you grumpy today?

Not really grumpy, but a bit sad: spotted a smouldering 1971 VW camper van on the M5(N) today while we were going south - as we were in a works car, we turned around at J5 to see if we could assist but by the time we reached it (only 3 or 4mins) it was obvious our thermos-flask sized fire extinguisher was going to be no good  All we could do was offer moral support to the driver and his wife while the four of us watched the flames take over  We were safely out of the way when the gas bottle exploded  The Fire Brigade and Highways turned up soon after There wasn't much left at the end Sad :(

Unfortunaly (n) :(

Why do they have a tendancy to catch fire? I've known a few to go up :(

In this instance it had not long been re-wired... hmm? Mainly it is because of old wiring giving up or fuel leaks from old lines (or even the pump) spraying onto the hot exhaust

However, I think one of the reasons they appear to be involved in a lot of roadside fires is that people recognise and remember seeing campers, where they would most likely forget or not even know the make of car engulfed on the hard shoulder

True. Was the spare tyre on the front? Did that go bang?

Was it a single or split screen? I know VW camper owners are always talking about single or split screens.

Did anyone else pull over and try to help?

Bay window No spare Another chap had stopped but his extinguisher wasn't up to the job either  Owner (Sam) said, "When I saw the flames I grabbed my guitar and got the wife out..."

Good to see he had his priorities right! :p

I put one in Stilo just before LPG conversion, but TBH I think it will do sweet FA. LPG would have gone BANG before I know of any faults with it probably :p

Yep, that kind of thing Like you said, by the time you notice you're on fire, that's not going to put it out! I've had my fire safety course, but wouldn't have felt particularly safe kneeling down to squirt that into the engine bay! I was happy to see the Fire Brigade turn up; they did a sterling job (y)

The real grump was going into work for 12hours when I originally wanted the day off - I swapped from Earlies (afternoon off) to Lates (morning off) to a 9-9 (no time to myself!) tho the day itself was fairly easy... and I had a motorcycle escort  (post 19974 in 'smile' thread)
