Getting decent softer compound tyres with a well designed tread pattern will make a difference too, depending on the tyres you're going between it may even be more than going 2cm wider on the tread and could increase the quality of the ride too (cheaper tyres tend to have a harder quality to them).
Wider flat tread will, most of the time, give better handling with the same tyre type (ie Pirelli P5000), however if you go too wide the tyre deforms and becomes bowed, this gives an effect smiler to over-presureised tyres. 5.5J is right on the narrow end of Toyo's recommended rim width for 195 tyres so I'd be looking at 6.5 or 7.0J rims.
